Some of you may have seen this, but I never have. It got hot enough to melt the lead in the connector. It was arcing where the wire met the connector. Couldn't find any reason except a bad connection, not tight enough. That's the verdict unless anyone else has any ideas.

its also a good practice to put the connecter all the way onto the terminal

Personally, the only time I've used those connectors is for an emergency or can't find the right length. I've never seen this problem but have had a lot of connection issues with them.

Yeah, I guess I was in a hurry when I connected the battery. Those style connectors were put on by the p.o.

It's a graphic example of what can happen to any electrical connections that aren't done properly, whether vehicles or structures. Any looseness at all will result in some degree of arcing. The more it arcs, the more it heats up. The sulphuric acid within a battery, as the battery discharges, creates a very explosive gas, hydrogen sulphide. If you've never seen an automotive battery explode, you're lucky. I hope you never do.

Fortunatly who ever tinned those cables used a low heat solder. Still atleast 600-800 degrees though. Ouch. Every one be carefull with stuff like this. I had a batt. explode on a backhoe once. Turned the key, then boom, cracked in half and loud as hell. And that batt. was never abused.

Never mind about the tinned cables, Damn, that is hot. I took a second peek at the pic.

My cousin once put the battery in and connected it BACKWARDS in my granddad's 68. I had to go through and replace a lot of fried wires.

A battery that is low on electrolyte may emit more hydrogen sulphide than full battery. Batteries that are being charged definately emit more. Fill up the battery with distilled water BEFORE you charge it. Keep any ignition source (flame/spark) away from a charging battery.
