Power Steering options - pulley to close to steering box - HELP
'49 Chevy on S10 frame w/ 5.3 from Buick Rainer.
I mounted my engine too far to the drivers side, and now my P/S pulley it to close to the steering box to attach a knuckle. Do you guys have any ideas. Different P/S pump? Or smaller pulley? |

Too close for a rag joint, but looks like you could get a Borgeson U joint on it.

Re: Power Steering options - pulley to close to steering box - HELP
Thanks ls1nova71.
I planned on having to use a couple Borgeson joints on it, but I don't know if I have room to squeeze one in there. I haven't bought them yet, so I don't know how big they are. Does anyone one have one they can use a micrometer on the exterior diameter for me? Guess I need them anyway, so I'll go ahead and buy them. I'll take a picture of my set up today with a tape measure in there so I can see how close it really is. |

Use a smaller pulley?

The standard Borgeson u-joints are 1 5/8" across and 3 1/4" long. Information taken directly from a Borgeson catalog.
Looks to me like you have plenty of room. |

Rob, will that negatively affect the power steering pump at all? Any idea what vehicles I might look at for options?

I would look at a corvette pulley, it think its a little smaller. It will spin the pump faster, not sure how much that will affect the feel.

Re: Power Steering options - pulley to close to steering box - HELP
See my latest pics below. From the diameter of the borgeson joint (thanks 68shortfleet) my math says the radius would be 52/64ths. It looks like I've got about 58-60 / 64ths. It'seems going to be darn close. I'm worried about engine rock when starting & running.
I'll do some research on the pulley. |

Use a 02 Camaro pulley. As long as you use a cooler you will be fine.
Use royal purple if you're still unsure. I had the same problem with a 72 chevelle there's alot of info on this in the chevelle forums. |

Re: Power Steering options - pulley to close to steering box - HELP
Thanks for the info Gooker. I wish I would have found this solution sooner. Last weekend I pulled the engine and tranny, cut out my motor mounts, then put the drivetrain back in, pushed it to the passengers side about 1-1/2" and re-tacked my motor mounts. Obviously the mounts were cut to fit where the motor was before, so I'm going to have some work to do to make them fit right again. I'll have to add back some of that metal I trimmed off before. 1 step forward...2 back.
