I have a 283 also. But my idea is to install Vortec heads.
Supposed to make close to 40 hp out the box.

The 305 heads is a great idea, but liek mentioned, compression may be an issue.
The 305 heads will breath fine for a smaller engine like the 283/307 and they are dirt cheap. Pretty much free. Plus, they are already set up for modern fuel.

I put a set of 60CC chamber 305 heads on my 350. I had talked with a few people that had done this and they said the boost in low end acceleration was worth it. My 72 won't be a highway runner or a drag strip truck, just a cruiser, so they will be fine for my application

The 305 heads will work great on a 283. About 9.2:1 compression with the 58cc, but the real deal for the 305 is a set of Vortec 305 heads which also have the 58cc chambers but the Vortec port design.
