Okay, this failing power steering bracket is about to give me an ulcer. I just know it's gonna freak out and cause all kinds of destruction while I'm cruising to work one morning. I've got to get 'er swapped out. Here's the problem...

Well, the REAL problem is, I can't figure out just which stinking bracket I need or where to get it. I saw this thread which referred to this bracket, but I don't know if it'll work.

Now, as near as I can tell, I've got the short water pump. Here's a top pic...

I can't get an exact measurement, but it appears to be 5-5/8 from the block to the very outer plane on the shaft (where the pulley mounts). I've always been a little slow when it comes to identifying SBC water pumps. That's the shorty, right?

Anyway, here's a top-down view of the existing power steering pump...

So, can anybody recommend a cheap, easy bracket that will replace this monstrosity? Am I looking for this or one of these or is there something else that I can use? Do I just find something cheap that will work with a "standard" Saginaw power steering pump and a short water pump?

Ugh, of course when I do get the new bracket, I've got to contend with removing the old one which appears to use one of the engine mount bolts to hold it in place. Man, after fighting with that monster air conditioning bracket to get my new intake and carb in place, I'm not looking forward to tackling another one.

Oh, and while I'm posting pictures, here's the most recent of the truck and engine...

Now that I stare at it a little longer, my existing bracket looks to be the stamped steel version of the 400L by Alan Grove. I've been told that the reason my power steering bracket is failing is because it's the wrong one for my pump. If that's true, then the Alan Grove model isn't going to do me a lick of good. Now, since Alan Grove's web site says the 400L is "...designed for the Chevrolet Saginaw non-metric power steering pump with the attached reservoir." and since I've been told that my stamped steel version of the 400L isn't the right one, it's only natural to extrapolate that my pump isn't the "Chevrolet Saginaw non-metric power steering pump with the attached reservoir."

Screw it... I'm just gonna weld the son-of-a-*****.

I happen to be a power steering parts horder pervert.

Here's the two different versions that these trucks use. The early one is first, and was slightly prone to cracking. The later version is last and was a better design. As long as you use one of these, it doesn't matter which.

Yes, you have a sort pump by the way.

Notice the patented antique green garage stool that the parts are laying on. It's a Tx Firefighter exclusive!

Well, that's starting to narrow it down. Is the one in toms68cst's post the same as the one in that first picture? Is that the same as what I've already got (and, hence, why it cracked)? If so, does anyone have one like in the second picture available for sale? I just want to get this mess behind me so I'll feel better about spending all my time tracking down the damn electrical gremlin I've got.

Take that picture over to the parts board and post wanted.

One of the big boys that sell parts will have one. It might take a little while till they get online, but some of the used parts vendors will fix you up.

I have one for 20 dollars, no cracks from a 72 chevy. Please PM me if needed.

Here's a tip on mounting it, I had trouble getting the bolt through both brackets, the motor mount and starting it in the block, so I took a piece of 3/8" all thread about 1 1/2" long and made a stud. Double nutted it to screw it through the motor mount into block. Removed nuts, mounted brackets and put another nut to tighten everything back up. Hope that helps a little.
