81-87 dash bezel brushed aluminum trim w/self adhesive backing? Lmc???
YOU KNOW I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CURIOUS ABOUT FIXING UP MY DASH BEZEL CHEAP FOR MY 84 TRUCK. INSTEAD OF FINDING A NOS ONE THAT GOES THROUGH THE ROOF ON EBAY. HAS ANYONE EVER TRIED THE SELF ADHESIVE BACKING BRUSHED ALUMINUM TRIM THAT LMC TRUCK IS OFFERING AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO BUYING AN ALREADY FINISHED BEZEL. IS THE BRUSHED ALUMINUM AS NICE AS A FACTORY NOS VERSION OR DOES IT LOOK VAGUE AND DULL. I'M WILLING TO GET CREATIVE AND DO THE PROCESS ON MY OWN. ANY SUGGESTIONS OR ADVICE. WOULD THIS BE A WISE INVESTMENT TO REFURBISH MY DASH BEZEL. I THINK I CAN DO IT.

i just recently ordered in and replaced my dash bezil with the silver/brushed aluminum look bezel from LMC Truck...the fitment was bang on (gauge hole cuts and screw holes) now as far as the installation was concerned- when i took off the old bezel which was a bronze like color there was some glue residue that was left behind...i left it the way it was and proceeded to installing the new silver bezel trim. (figured a bit of extra glue wouldn't hurt in this situation) The new trim had a backing that is supposed to be removed before installation and then simply lay it onto the dash. Now with that being said the thing i highly recommend its putting some kind of weights down on the new dash bezel trim especially in the 2 folds of the dash just to ensure good adhesion...or else the trim piece will keep popping off in stressed areas.

i always figured that it'd be best to use the spray on 3M adhesive... didn't know the overlay piece already had adhesive... good to know

I bought the inserts for my doors and dash. I just finished the doors and you can see what they look like on my build thread link below.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=464557 Next, I have to install my new dash and then the insert. Probably won't get to it for a couple weeks. The quality was ok. I noticed on a couple spots on the edge that were not cut clean, and my drivers side holes were drilled incorrectly. I drilled new holes and the door strap bracket covered their mistake and my new hole. Overall, I like the way they turned out, but not a perfect product by any means.

I thought about the LMC overlay thing, but since I have an aftermarket radio with a hacked instrument bezel, I decided to get a used black bezel on Ebay - I think I paid about $38 total with shipping. This bezel also has a "pre-hacked" radio opening and does not look too bad. Since the new trucks all have flat black instrument panels I thought I would just go with plain black. The chrome rings around the instrument openings are somewhat worn in spots, but I might just remove that chrome completely.
As a side note, I worked in a Chevrolet parts plant in Michigan in the late 1970s where all of these instrument bezels were produced. A hot stamp foil machine was used to apply that thin chrome to the instrument openings on the bezel. Rolls of chrome "tape" were loaded into the machine and a hot press came down on the bezel to apply the "chrome". The process was a never ending defect prone operation, with the tape failing to stick properly to the bezel. I worked in the material department that supplied the rolls of foil to the production line, and the production supervisor was constantly coming back to complain about the "bad foil" he got from me. He described his operation as a "snowstorm" of foil. After tweaking the machine heat settings and changing suppliers, the bezels were eventually good enough to get out the door, but we all know how long they lasted in use. Regarding the overlays on the large area of the bezels, these were supplied by a company called Northern Engraving. Both fake wood and fake aluminum were installed at this operation. Mostly this operation went OK, but as I recall the fake wood overlays sometimes had issues around the mounting holes. When I design my vehicle of the future everything dash related will be metal. |

That is awesome. You are the first person i have ever discussed with who actually worked in a gm plant when these trucks were going into production. That is very interesting.
