Is there a way to check signal and flasher function w/o column installed

Trying to get the wiring figured out on this 69 truck. Have everything working except turn signals and hazards.
Is there any way to test these functions with out the steering column installed?
I assume there is a way to manually manipulate these functions.
Can somebody walk me through this ?

Test for power at the half-dome connecter for the column: Three separate sources: stop lamp switch, turn flasher and hazard flasher. Then use any 12v hot source as a jumper to test the individual lamp circuits.

I put a pin-out/wire color guide up a week or so ago in a different thread. I think you can search for my recent posts by my user name? If not, I'll find it for you this afternoon.

Purple in, is power from the turn signal flasher relay
Black/White in, is power from the stop lamp switch
Brown in, is power from the hazard flasher relay
All grounds are made after the lamp elements
Turn indicators in dash are powered off the front turn lamps

Left turn:
Purple in to switch goes to Black/yellow out (left brake/turn lamp)
Purple in to switch goes to Black/Blue out (left front turn lamp)
Black/White in to switch goes to Green out (right brake/turn lamp)

Right turn:
Purple in to switch goes to Green out (right brake/turn lamp)
Purple in to switch goes to Blue out (right front turn lamp)
Black/White in to switch goes to Black Yellow out (left brake/turn lamp)

No turn:
Black/White in to switch goes to Black/Yellow out (left brake/turn lamp)
Black/White in to switch goes to Green out (right brake/turn lamp)

Looks like Domier beat me to it but I'll reiterate anyway.


There are three input wires to the half moon connector for the steering column.
The white wire- powers the brake lights. These would be the yellow and dark green wires in the connector, yellow is left and dark green is right.

The purple wire- powers the rear and front turn signal lights. The rear lights use the same yellow and dark green wires as the brakes. Yellow= left turn, dark green=right turn
The front turn wires are Lt Blue=left turn, dark blue=right turn. The dash turn indicators are wired in with the front signal lights so the wires may or may not be tied into the front turn wires at the connector. Sometimes they join at the firewall block.

The brown wire is the power wire for the hazard flashers and it should be hot all the time.
The purple wire will be hot anytime the key is on if the fuse is good.
The white brake wire will be hot any time the brake pedal is pushed and the brake switch is activated.

To jumper the left and right side turn lights-------Left turn, Key on, jump the purple wire to the yellow and light blue wires in the connector.
Right side-----Jumper the dark green and dark blue wires in the connector.

Hazards------jumper the yellow,lt blue,dark green,and dark blue wires to the brown wire in the connector.

You didn't ask but the brakes ------jumper the white wire and the yellow and dark green wires in the connector and step on the brakes. The two rear lights should light up.

The black wire is for the horn relay, jump it to ground and the horn should blow.

All this is assuming all the light bulbs are good and grounded.
Check the thread for the pictures.

The wires may have the stripes in them but the main colors should be the same. Aftermarket column harnesses may be anything. A different adapter may be needed for later year harnesses. They use a flat style connector.

This picture shows the connector and the wires with stripes. It may take some matching to figure out which wires go where. Have fun. VV

I saw someone had a kent moore tester on ebay a while back but talked myself out of it. I took several of the kent moore part numbers out of the factory service manual and searched ebay and found a few but couldnt justify buying any vs frequency of use.

Somehow I missed this in the OP. It matters a bunch. You will have to test each wire for 12 volts with a volt meter as you jump it in the steering column connector.

Just lay the column in your lap or the floor (whichever makes the connector fit) and try the signals and the flashers
