questions

I am having my engine rebuilt. The guy rebuilding it discovered that the bearings in the fan clutch had frozen. He said he is going to replace it with a fan with out a clutch. He said this is better because it keeps the engine cooler. Is this true?
Next I would like to learn how to weld. I have several spots were new metal needs to be put in. What type of welding outfit is best suited for this? I always see welders at harbor freight or at home depot for between 200 and 400. Is this the type of outfit i need because this is about as muck as i want to spend. Also are there any good books for welding?

Re: questions

A standard fan is not likely to keep it any cooler. The one you have now is turning at full speed, as will the standard fan, whether it needs to or not. A fan that turns at full speed all the time wastes gas. A new thermostatic fan clutch is what you need.

Re: questions

I would replace the clutch with a good quality replacement part. Having the fan turn all the time wastes power.

A welder thread that is "stickied" in the bodywork forum:

Re: questions

Definitely get a fan with a clutch or an eletric fan. Make sure he doesn't sell you a flex fan, they are no good. You can always get an electric fan too.
