Colo. Newbie & AC question

Hey There! I just joined the list and this is my first post. I had a question about the Custom Autosound receivers & CD changers but found some great information on that. This place has it all!

I do have a question about the air conditioning for my new 72 C10. It blows. Okay, it's not that bad, but it's not very cool air coming out of there and I was wondering if that's typical or if there's a way to improve the "performance" of it.

Re: Colo. Newbie & AC question

I'm not sure if it's normal as I haven't gotten my A/C hooked up yet, or the cab on for that matter, but you could be a little low on freon. Might also check to make sure your fan is pulling plenty of air through the condenser. I'm sure someone else with a little more experience with the A/C on these trucks will post up soon. By the way, from South Texas.

Re: Colo. Newbie & AC question

Welcome to your '72 C10 from Colorado. Do you really need AC there?? If you send it to me here in July when its 105, I'll bet I can get it working good. My 2-65 blows good too, but its not very cold either!

If it is a stock AC setup then it should have a sight glass on top of the receiver/dryer. The r/d is the round "can" in front of the core support with hard lines coming in and going out at the top.

Start the truck, turn the AC on, then go look at the sight glass. If you see bubbles you're probably low on freon. If you see no bubbles work the throttle by hand and see if any bubbles appear.

Before the eco-nazis took over the USA, you simply could go buy a 1 pound can of R12 "freon" at any auto parts counter and top the system off. Now you have to pay a federally licensed AC tech a bunch of money to determine that it isn't leaking and dump in about a pound of R12 at $80/pound plus an hour labor.

Note that this is the case most of the time. Leaks do happen but they usually have obvious signs because if it is leaking you also will blow some of the compressor oil out with the R12.
