Starting to look at places to visit. For retirement, originally from arkansas, but looking in NC, SC. Want to leave ohio, but not all that far south.

Cars are a big part of my life, so , shows, swap meets car scene will be a big factor. Any suggestions?
Boone, asheville sound like a nice area?

Hey congratulations. I saw the Maltese cross. I a fire captain here in Nevada and will be retiring in next 3 years too. Trying to balance taxes, kids, and a cheaper cost of living as well as living somewhere with no snow. Matt

I usually try to visit my family in TN in the May timeframe to go to Goodguys in Nashville. However this year, my son, grandson and I are headed to Goodguys first show in NC (Raleigh) May 17-19th. I believe around 1500 pre-70's expected. Should be a good show and time.

Actually that show is next weekend, April 17-19. I'll be there in my 50.

I remember reading that 65 percent of the US population lives within 4 hours of Carlisle Pennsylvania, that is why they have so many of the big shows in that regions. Frustrating for us guys out west, but I kind of like the relative isolation....

UP north when it is hot down south and down South when it is cold up North.

I plan to retire on the 31st of December and will never manage to get to all the events and places I want to go to and see.

I've got an old "huntin trailer" that might get stripped to the frame and get turned into a large Teardrop with some storage in it for take along stuff. The trailer has a clear title and good solid frame and nothing else going for it. That would cut down on motel room costs.

Originally from Wisconsin so we wanted the change of seasons. Settled in Flagstaff, AZ this time last year. Summer is 70-80s winter few 30s but mostly 40-50. We had 2 big snowfalls this year. Lasted a week or so each. Supposed to be more, but it's been pretty dry the last 2 winters. Couple of hours to Phoenix, four to Vegas, close to southern California also. Mountains in our backyard and an hour to the Grand Canyon. Love it so far. Big change from 9 years in downtown Chicago.

Dream retirement: Myrtle Beach, SC for the winter and the Asheville, NC area for the summer. You get some change of season without the extremes of hot and cold encountered further north and south. No 1947-59s to be found there though, you'd need to retire to classic car and truck Valhalla west of the MS River for that.

Retirement............

Something else to consider is available medical care and aging. My parents retired in their late 50's to central Virginia. Nice 40 acre spot 3 miles down a dirt road, 12 miles round trip for a loaf of bread. Top shelf hospital care was an hour and a half away in Richmond Va. Everything was great until health issues popped up and suddenly living in the country wasn't so cool. Mom had to call the rescue squad for Dad one night, the dispatcher asked if Mom could get Dad in the car and meet the squad at the local funeral home, 14 miles away, one stop shopping I suppose. LOL Seriously though, the squad was so far away the funeral home was a good meet point.

Congrats on your retirement. Bummer a fella has to be old before he can retire!

I worked there outside in June July and August, now I have to close my brain when I travel through there on the way to San Diego.

Great place to be all winter and only 167 miles to San Diego.
Next to Reno Tucson is the biggest small town I have been in, and for more traffic and just about anything else 100 miles north is East L A..... or Phoenix Valley, 6 hrs East of LA!!

Congrats on retirement, you will wonder how you had so much time for someone else, after a year or so.

Not enough time to get anything accomplished in retirement, one pay check a month and every day is Friday, Saturday or Sunday !!

I've got placeholder property in both areas but am still a few years away from retirement. Can't wait to bolt PA and head south with a truck or two in tow.

Here is why I like the west, lots of open space. In this pic the GPS is set to show the next 10 miles ahead, just outside of Burns Oregon. That stretch is 18 miles long, straight as an arrow. Notice the "turn in 109 miles"...

How do you keep awake? In western Pa you can't take your eyes off the road. I just retired in January and I love it. Six Saturdays and a Sunday. Friend came by this morning and we installed the windshield. tbrown

Looking forward to retirement myself in a few years and plan to stay right where we are. We've lived in NJ, PA, VA, Chicago and now back home in downstate IL. Really happy here.

Affordable, not crowded, friendly people and close enough to St. Louis, Indianapolis or Chicago if we want to do something there.

Has never been as issue, in the 70's I would drive straight thru from El Paso to Eugene OR with a rest stop for a few hours in N. CA. Timed it so I went thru LA in the middle of the night. Had the Chevelle set up to run a 90 all day long and it was when there was a lot of CB traffic to keep track of the highway patrol. I can still do 10-12 hours a day, I like road trips, and a lot of them are thru mountains, etc. with scenery. Always have to be on the look out for deer and antelope, and a lot of the off highway areas are open range with cattle wandering on the road.

I drove trucks for a living all my life so I can understand what you are saying. I still love to drive! Would like to do some serious trips in the cameo when I get it done. tbrown

Kentucky has and will continue to host, for a few more years, the NSRA event.Also Somerset KY has show all the time. Nice here in KY, mild winters (little snow), and warm summers. Natural beauty where ever you look. Great state parks, lots of fishing, hunting, camping, boating and unlimited access to Bourbon. Come on down.

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
