Peanut butter and plastic
I got a nice shroud for my truck today so I decided to clean it up, before I put it on.
I wiped it down with Totally Awesome (Dollar store brand cleaner) until it was pretty clean, but it still looked old. After some interweb searching I found this link showing how to restore plastic with peanut butter. Yep, PEANUT BUTTER! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahum5cvLyXM I figured, what the hell. I polished my new shroud with peanut butter and it looks great! Seriously, I'm amazed. |

Re: Peanut butter and plastic
I wonder if it will attract mice 🐭
I have heard of some folk's using GoJo to restore the look of the heater\ac housing.

Re: Peanut butter and plastic
Its the peanut oil that's giving the clean sheen, You can do the same with most cooking oils also.

Re: Peanut butter and plastic
I scrubbed mine also and hit it with a matte clear. Make the knarls and grain of the plastic pop. No oily residue. But im sure theres cases where it would come in handy

Re: Peanut butter and plastic
GOOP works very well for bringing back the luster in plastics. It's also a great stain remover for your clothing. Oh, and it's a hand cleaner too.

Re: Peanut butter and plastic
I wish I would have taken a before pic, it looked like a grungy 47 year old piece of plastic.
I think it has to do with the peanut oil, and the mild abrasive properties of the peanut butter. It's not oily, I wiped it dry, fairly vigorously. I prefer not to paint plastic, you can never "unpaint" original plastic. Anyway, here's the after pics. Last edited by Greasey Harley; 02-25-2015 at 12:06 PM. |

Re: Peanut butter and plastic
Peanut butter can contain any number of oils. Peanut, palm, vegetable, canola, cotton seed, rapeseed, sunflower, etc ... I can see a whole slew of critters lining up for the smorgasbord you have provided. If it looks great, who cares. Make mine crunchy. Never understood the smooth thing. Cannot trust people who do not like peanuts in their peanut butter.

Re: Peanut butter and plastic
What would be the longevity of the oils or wipe on stuff. Does it need reapplied later as it would eventually dry out?

Re: Peanut butter and plastic
I can understand the peanut butter that has oil in it. Seems too messy to use. Baby oil , to me, is easier. Wipe on generously, let sit for a few hours or as long as you want, then wipe off excess with dry rag or towel. I recently reconditioned my 72 original door panels. The pics I think speak for themselves. The wood grain insert, arm rest, handles are new. Panel and insert trim ring are original and used baby oil to make it look better. Will need to reapply at some point, when needed. Tried Armorall that did not work. Panel had the whitish look as if dried out, which i suppose it had.

Re: Peanut butter and plastic
I just wipe the motor oil my engine spits all over it
My one son worked at a commercial bakery. The food industry uses mineral oil to lube equipment and he brought a 5 gallon bucket home. That's a lifetime supply! It's great on tools and machined surfaces. My woodworking equipment is kept nice with it. It is non-staining,too

Re: Peanut butter and plastic
Drive my truck the same and thought that too. Until one day I was stomping boots at a mouse running around my cab while driving 40mph. Was not so bad until he tried to run up my pants leg. Would have made a great video.
