Danna 44 and Eaton HO52 Identification Help
I bought a 1957 Chevy 3100 that was converted to a 4x4 a little while ago and have been having trouble identifying the axles. I have tried to do as much research as possible about this but haven't been able to figure out what vehicle these axles came from. The front axle is a Dana 44 and the rear is an Eaton HO52. I found some numbers on the 44 but none appear to be the BOM number and I can't find much at all on the rear. The front has "44 5F" on the front bottom right of the center section. The only numbers I found on the tubes are two series of numbers. The first is "11 7 3 C" and the second appears to be "N73A32657" but the fifth digit (3) is very hard to see and could be a 5. I havent found any identification on the rear, may be looking in the wrong places. I have spent most of my time trying to ID the front because i need to get the proper tie rod and new tie rod ends. When I bought the truck the guy told me he thought the whole drive train was from a 1963 K20 but was not sure. I am trying to verify what vehicle and year they came from so I can get brakes, tie rod, tie rod ends and whatever else I may need. The transmission is a Muncie SM465 and the transfer case is an NP 202 if that helps at all.
Information obtained so far: -Front Danna 44 Closed Knuckle Springs over axle Passenger side drop Low pinion 65.5 inches WMS-WMS Spring perches are almost 2.5 inches wide Almost 33 inches from center of spring perch to center of spring perch 2x12 brakes 8 lugs Wheel studs are 1/2 - 20 threads with a 19/32 (0.594) knurl -Rear Eaton HO52 Approximately 63 inches WMS-WMS (measured with wheels on so this is not exact) 8 lug 1/2-20 wheel studs From what I have found through my research, the front seems to match a front Dana 44 from a 3/4 ton Jeep Truck (1963-1973) although i thought jeeps were spring under axle. The rear seems to be out of a chevrolet. Can anyone verify this as being correct or wrong or provide any further information? I cant find any information about a Chevrolet with a front Dana 44 narrower than about 69 inches. |

I checked the other site and got the response: 1960-1968. I am hoping with the extra information I provided here someone can narrow it down a little more for me as far as what vehicle it might be from. I know the Danna 44 can't be from a 1963 K20 because I got a new center tie rod for a 63 K20 and it is a couple inches too long so i cant get the toe set.

Put a disc brake Dana 44 in it from a 73-87. Easy cheesy.

Pretty sure you are looking at '67-'70 axles. Definitely not jeep with the cast in passenger side mount. Look how much wider the perch is than the springs in that older truck.
Edit: Pull the front cover off. If original ring & pinion, they will have date manufactured on them which will narrow it down further.

I will pull the cover and look for a date on the gears. Getting a different axle would be the ideal solution. I would like to get disk brakes eventually but I am trying to get it on the road first without spending to much money. Dont have another truck at the moment.

Here are the numbers on the ring gear:
1 27 82 DANA D 18679 A3D290 50-11 900 I assume the first set of numbers would be the date January 27, 1982. If thats the case they have obviously been changed because this is a closed knuckle. I think the 50-11 is for the teeth. 50 teeth on the ring gear and 11 teeth on the pinion so that is 4.54 gears if i am doing the math right. Everything appears to be in pretty good shape except for the tie rod ends and brakes. I can get brakes easy enough so I might just get the center tie rod tube shortened to the right length and use that if I cant get this figured out. |

Get a pair of tie rod ends and some weld in bungs and make a tie rod.

As far as i know the eaton rear ends was used in gm trucks only.Fords used a 9 inch or dana 60 and dodge was dana's as well.The front axle might be a jeep j20 they are 65.9 inches wide.If its not a jeep j20 then its some kinda dodge.

I pulled the long side axle shaft and measured it. The inner shaft was 35 5/8" with 30 splines and the outer was 9 1/2" with 19 splines. According to a chart I found, those sizes match a 1967-69 Chevrolet K-20 3/4 ton (35.63" with 30 splines and 9.53" with 19 splines). Not sure how the overall size WMS-WMS is shorter. I might pull the other axle shaft and measure it just to see what I come up with. As for now, I think I will make a tie rod and be done with it until I can upgrade to some disk brakes.
