1964 Gumby project build ... I6 SB

This is my build thread started the first day of spring this year. This has been in my family since new. First purchased new in 64 by my dad's father. Then it was given to family friend, whom of which let it go to hell. My mom's father bought it off of the family friend and started replacing piece by piece for me, to be my first car when I turned 17. However my grandfather passed away of a heart attack while working on the truck. The truck has been pass on to me, and has great sentimental value for me and my parents. I let it stay at my parents for years rusting away until I decided to make a difference. I am now 25 starting my restoration. I dabble in cars and engines a little, so I am getting overwhelmed with my future metal work I'll have todo. So if anyone out there has any suggestions as my built goes on, they will be greatly appreciated. Happy Easter!

Welcome Aboard. Awesome History on your '64 Stepper. Just cruise this site and you will find a wealth of Info and a ton of great people. From personal experience, post your questions and they will be answered. This board has boosted my confidence and willingness to tackle jobs I've never attempted in the past. Have fun with your truck, and keep us updated with plans and pics... We love Pics... The "Gumby" name has me curious...

Re: 1964 Gumby project build ... I6 SB

Congrats on getting the truck back and taking on the project.

My latest project is a 63 long step. I am new to this site and these trucks but not to car projects.
My truck is in similar shape as yours and has an ugly sunroof added. I plan to work on the mechanics of the truck first while seeing if a decent cab becomes available. Between floors, corners, rockers, sunroof, and possibly wanting a big window I think I will take my chances
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Lol. The project name was a highschool nickname of which I foolishly got vanity plates saying "GUMBY" years ago. So I'm kind of stuck with the name. It has nothing todo with possible color schemes.

Re: 1964 Gumby project build ... I6 SB

Unless you want to keep that cab for nostalgic reasons I would probably look for a better one.
...of course that's easy for me to say out here in the middle of the desert.
I'm still not sure how a got a rusty one?

I agree with getting a donar cab....there is alot of work there, and you may never get all the rust issues resolved.

Ya, I'm currently looking for a replacement cab near me. Thanks for your input. I have enough work to keep me busy until one becomes available.

Re: 1964 Gumby project build ... I6 SB

Not saying they aren't out there, but if you can get one from out west were its much dryer, be a better advantage. I imagine that most of the cabs in NJ look similar to what we find in NC. But they are out there. Just found a 98% OEM rust free hood 30min away this weekend. The donar cab will allow you to concentrate on many other aspects of the truck and in the long run will be better.

Re: 1964 Gumby project build ... I6 SB

Good work! After busting all those old bolts loose you have to be bleeding from at least one knuckle?

I have the urge to do the same thing to mine but I am going to wait until I have a pile of new parts to throw at it first.

If you are seriously in the market for a cab I can look around out here. I will be going to Tuckers tomorrow. They might have one.

Ooh Yea. I couldn't tell you how many times I walked away cursing. Hense why it took so long. :/

But yes Definitely serious about finding a cab. Keep an eye out for me please. I appreciate it. I'll take whatever contacts you can give me out west. Less rust the better
obviously. Thanks Tommy !

Subscribed! This is going to be one awesome build!!! What are your plans for the Inline 6???? I have a hotrod rebuild manual if you are interested in adding a little power to it. Parts are a little spendy, but the journey is awesome! If you want info on the inline 6 I can post some pictures and give you my experience so far. Anyhow nice truck and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

Re: 1964 Gumby project build ... I6 SB

I was planning on rebuilding the 230 but making it a 250 since the blocks are the same, I just need the rebuild kit and different crankshaft. I would like to replace the engine with a 292 but I fear moving the engine mounts and not being able to use any other motor in the future. 230,250 and 350 from my research all have the same engine mounts. Definitely switching to header(s) and a different intake

The inliners are cool. I did a warmed over 250 in the Burb and love it. The 65 has a 350 in It and I like it too. The biggest diference is cost. You can throw in 3 v8s for the price to build a full tilt inliner. If you builda stock one, then mabey 2 v8s
