Unhappy Q-Jet rebuild problems

I was told to check for a worn throttle shaft by spraying carb cleaner on the shaft on the outside of the carb and seeing it the idle change. When I did that it sputtered and wanted to stall. I assume the shaft is worn out from 200k miles and needs attention.

How hard is it to DIY rebush the throttle shaft on a Qjet? A shop sold me some brass tubing to use as a bushing, but they wouldn't install it for me since the shaft has to be drilled out bigger to fit in the bushing and it wasnt worth their time. Local carb shops seem to be hard to find nowdays and a decent carb from the junk yard is impossible. I really would just like to reuse the orig carb.

Also, the air valve plates on the top of the carb are sticking too. They are hard to move by hand for the first 30 degrees or so. Once full open, I can let go and they will spring back but will hang open about at 30 degrees as well. More a/v spring tension does not seem to make them close any better. Seems like they are binding up. Even with the 2 plates removed from the shaft, it's like a bind. Is there a way to bush these like the throttle shaft?

Q-Jet rebuild problem

You might consider these guys for a good rebuild:

I bought one for my 78 C-10. They put bushings on all the shafts and completely rebuild the carb. They send you a rebuild carb matched to your year of truck and you send back your old one. I changed mine out on a Saturday morning and it ran great.

Well if you could stand spending a few bucks on shipping, and the time it would take, I have a friend who bores them out and bushes them very professionally. It's worth the time to do it.

Both Summit & Jegs want 475.99 for a 85 style Q-jet, so I don't think that CU is that out of line. The cost of a carb for Justin's 76 is $195.40 + $35 core for a heavy duty emissions truck, $209.45 +$40 core for a light duty emissions carb. A compatible Edelbrock Q-jet is over $450.

I'd like to get a new carb, but $$$$. I really dont want to have to ship in my carb to any place because if UPS looses the package, I'll be without a carb. Has anyone re bushed a carb on there own? Someone mentioned using a reamer instead of a drill bit in a press. Would that work better? Thanks
