78 Chevy Van steering column

I am putting a van tilt column into my 57 chevy truck. Does anyone have pictures of the dis-assembly process? I cant seem to get the turn signal switch out and feel like I am going to break it. Any help would be great....

Re: 78 Chevy Van steering column

Remove the tilt lever, the screw holding the turn signal lever and it as well, then the hazzard knob. The tin shroud should be worked off at this time (try to avoid bending it, I used a strap wrench (rubber) and just spin it, a little lubricant and it should pop off). Remove the 3 large phillips screws and work the connector out past the lower cone and finally off. It's a pain and real tight.

Good luck!
Ted.

Re: 78 Chevy Van steering column

When I had to get into my 82 eldo column to remove the lock cylinder I googled and found a couple of sites with detailed disassembly and assembly instruction of GM tilt columns. The sequence is pretty specific and the one plate can be tricky if you don't know how to get it off. I just printed what I needed and do not have the link but remember it popped right up when I searched.
