Re: Project "Sweet 16"
Nice Willy's. I love the old Iron for wheelin. I run a 71 Scout II... It's nothing special either. 345/EFI/D60 and 14B/NP203-D300 doubler/40" Iroks/Ram assist/Hyrdoboost brakes. But we sure do have a good time in it!

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
Mknittle, I love the old scouts. I'm in several clubs. We pride ourselves on outwheeling jeeps on a regular basis...
CAB MOUNTS ARE IN! I don't know if I ever want to do that again though... I ended up plating the tops of the brackets in 1/4", seam welding them all the way around. Had the cab off/on at least 6 times, and still had doubts as I was burning the tack welds in. I think I am happy with the final placement though. seems to be exactly square, wheels are centered in the fender openings. I haven't "Final welded" the brackets in yet, just a couple stitches to make sure they stay on. Tomorrow I'll cut the 2" holes and slide the cab on with the bushings in place to see where I'm at height wise. once I'm satisfied, I'll pull the cab (Again) and burn them in fully. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
Today's progress... I drilled my 2" holes in the mount brackets and put the cab back on (forgot to take pics of the mounts, but it will come back off tomorrow so I'll post some then). Fit like a glove. Cab is perfectly square on the chassis. Wheelwells are right where we wanted them, and final ride height (with no suspension mods yet) is 8" from the bottom of the front fender to the ground. We are planning on a 2/3 drop in the future. The following pics are of the cab on it's own mounts, with bolts in final position.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
If anyone has use for this info, The back of the cab (using a 91 short cab/long bed 2wd S10 frame) is exactly 21 7/8th inches in front of the center of the second (stock) bed mounting bracket. This centers the front wheels perfectly in the fenders.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
I also finally relocated the engine, now that I was absoulely sure where the cab would be. I removed the stock S10 motor mount pearches, bolted them to the block, and slid it back 2 1/4". Then put a couple good stitch welds on to hold it in place. I have about 2" behind the pass. valvecover, 1.5" behind the HEI distributor.
Tomorrow I will put some steel trussing around the backside of the pearches. Here's some pics of the final motor position (with GM standard 6 deg of driveline angle). Tomorrow, finish seam welding the body mounts and motor mount pedistals, and figure out what I'm gonna do for a trans crossmember.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
looking good. For steering, I personally can't stand seeing s-10 or other tilt wheels inside the cab, looks completely out of place, but to each their own. I just cut the stock steering column down and used some ujoints going through s-10 headers. Kept the stock wheel, just moved it closer to the dash. Is 6* standard? I always heard 3* and or whatever makes the carb level. Looking good though, have you found a bed yet?

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
Oh and for driveshaft. I used a 4x4 s10 2piece shaft. At one point I was going to custom order a 1 piece, just haven't yet really. The 2wd 2piece won't work.
I have a nv3500 5 speed. Not sure if the length is different from the 700r4 and turbo350's, Im sure they are different.

Maybe you can find a stock 70s tilt from a manual transmission truck or car.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
As for the driveshaft, the 4x4 shaft worked perfect for me, with no cutting. I guess I should have stated that the 2x4 shaft would not just mount up.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
99, Thanks for the heads up. I'm using a TH350, shoved 2 inches back so I'll have to do some measuring to ensure that a 4x4 shaft will work. Having the current shaft cut/balanced only cost about $60, but requires driving to KC twice (50mi each way).
Mknittle, found my steering column today. 66 Chevy pickup, auto trans, non-tilt, with the cool clear shift indicator on top, and it's non keyed (ignition on the dash). Perfect. I also located the brake pedal assembly, power steering pump, and nice side glass. Shorty also had a Cool 51 COE (used to be a tow truck so it had a really short frame)... He's got quite a collection, at least 6 or 8 55-59's (one 57 GMC with a 347 Pontiac) and I counted 5 AD trucks, 7 or 8 67-72's, and 7 or 8 63-66's.... I know where to find parts now!

skymangs, Looking good, It is always good finding parts to work out. It is a shame you are so far away or I could fix your drive shaft for you. It is an easy job. Keep up the great work.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
Shannon, been reading your thread for several months. Love the Burb! I could do the shaft, if I had a lathe, must make life a lot easier having the correct tools at your disposal. Thanks for the offer though. I think driving to PA would not pass the "Cost analysis" test.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
Skyman, incredible work. I am a little frustrated with you now though, as you made me go out and rip off the body mounts I welded on my truck after seeing yours! I went the lazy route and just re-used the old ones that I cut off the 1500 truck, but now.....
Well let's just say I am heading to the metal supplier today.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
Danheit, thank you for the compliment. My welding still needs more practice... I wish I could lay those perfect beads that never need to be cleaned up!
Sorry about the cab mount cutting! Your build on a 454 1500 chassis is pretty sweet too, I'll be following it closely. I have future plans of building an A.D. Suburban 454 1 ton Dually on a newer chassis as well (need a new [old] tow pig soon!)

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
So I opted against the fancy S10 V8 conversion mounts, thinking I can accomplish the same thing by re-using the existing 4.3 mounts. earlier I posted that I had removed the pedestals and bolted them on the motor mount (on the engine). Then positioned the motor where I wanted it. Then I tacked the mounts in place and pulled the motor to seam them. I wound up moving it 2.5" back, and had to build bracing around the backside. here's some pics of the mounts before.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
here's the finished mount. I also picked up an 88-92 2wd fullsize pickup trans crossmember, and got that installed.
Next we use the hoist to flip the frame on it's side to clean up the underside, and some finishing underbelly welding.

Re: Project "Sweet 16"
So, I picked up the steering column today. Paid a whopping $15 for it and pulled it myself. Came out of a 64-66 Chevy truck. It has the cool clear shift indicator on the column that my son wanted. I also found a complete rear heat/AC out of a 99 Tahoe for $100 that inlcudes the control panel, all hoses, compressor, and evap/heater core. I'm thinking I can mount this behind the seat, and take care of all the heating/cooling dutes without having lines and hoses running throughout the engine compartment.
