What yall think i should do?

I found a 400 small block that a buddy of mine had. He said it runs real good. He used to be a dirt track racer for a short time. Short being only a few races. He built this 400 small block and he says that their is nothing wrong with it and it is ready to jus be dropped in. He says he will let me have it for $600. What do yall think?

Re: What yall think i should do?

NOT AND EXPERT HERE>>>>>

But I think that if he dirt track raced it, it would have been set up for high rpm driving (ie low end dog) as they would have geared it tall to keep it in the rev's as soon as they get on the throttle. Might not be the best for a street motor. I would ask for info on the heads, camshaft, and pistons used. Will it run on pump gas? And you know if it's been raced, it's been pretty well used........

Re: What yall think i should do?

The price seems more than fair (see- cheap) if it runs well and would suit your driving needs.

Re: What yall think i should do?

Weather you use the motor in your truck or not it sounds like a steal to me. You might be able to resale/trade it for a street engine of greater value. I'm not sure it would be a good choice for a street truck though. Just my.02

$600.00 is a good price. You would put $350.00 into machine work alone if you were to duplicate it. Than add in the parts. As for the RPM band, that is as simple as a cam change. If he has it set up for high RPM, you can ask him how the cam was installed. (Where it was degreed in) You may be abe to change the installed location enough to make it work for you, but I doubt it. A cam change is cheap and easy.

Great looking SB400!

I agree with big al, I have a SB400 in my '72 and it is a great motor. Around here people love these things, so if you decide to not keep it, you will definitely recoup your money, guaranteed!

Re: What yall think i should do?

buy it for sure. They are a great motor for these trucks and you would have no problem getting your money back out of it if you decide to go another way.

Re: What yall think i should do?

Ask him which heads he has on the motor. Typically track racers want high rpms and high compression. Most will not run well on regular gas.

Other than that it sounds like a great deal.
