Call it a newb Big Block question

I'm putting a 454 in my 67 C10. I have tried a set of original BB mounts from a 69 and they don't fit my frame right. It's like the top flange isn't long enough, and to get the valve covers not to hit the fire wall I would have to grind off a half inch of where the fuel pump clearance on the frame is? I slid my small block mounts forward and the motor fits in the truck great, other than the manifolds won't mount up because they hit the frame mount. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? I would like to stick with factory mounts, but a custom set of mounts are about to be fabbed up. Let the flamming begin.
