What's the proper way of restoring the paint in your side trim?

When I restored my truck years back my trim was in decent shape, however the satin black paint was horrible.. I sat down with lacquer thinner and a rag and stripped it down perfectly clean. Now I'm wondering how I can restore the black paint in the trim. Do you guys use adhesive vinyl or paint? Also, how do you get the little thin areas in the upper moulding?
