Re: What Do Got here?....(Trans & X-Case)

Thanks guys!

I'm guessing that these are probably original to the truck (as the engine is)...would that be a good guess?...anyway to tell....Partial VIN stamped anywhere?

Also, my plan was to have a PRO go through them...even though they both seem to operate fine...Though I only drove the truck about 20 Miles getting it home.....then she started getting torn apart.....What is a ballpark price it should cost for a quick overhaul on these units?

Dan

I did mine myself, $350. in parts (ebay). Not sure what a shop would charge.

Re: What Do Got here?....(Trans & X-Case)

My SM 465 looked like a grenade went off in side it. After all was said and done it was $1300.00 dollars. Yours is in good working order, shouldn't be more than $700.00 I would think.

NP205 rebuild kit:
169.00
http://northwestfab.com/rebuild.html

They have a bearing and seals kit for the SM465 as well.

Why not do it yourself? They're not that tough to do.

Pro will bill you 6 hours on the 205 and 8 hours on the 465.

Re: What Do Got here?....(Trans & X-Case)

sdailey had his same combo done for about $1,000 I think...

I say do it yourself or just change the fluid and run it till you hear funny noises...of course then they might be to shot to run at all

Re: What Do Got here?....(Trans & X-Case)

Both units are pretty reliable - pretty unlikely that a rebuild woud be needed for either.

When I switched from a three speed manual to the SM465 like you have, I ran up to a local tranny shop and the guy there was nice enough to take a quick peak inside the SM465, I already had the top cover opened up. He was visually able to see that it was fine. Maybe you could get someone to do a quick visual inspection for you??

I then took it home and put in new seals and gaskets in both the transfer case and SM465.

If I were you, I'd separate the tranny and look to make sure the coupler is in good shape, if not, replace it.

Other than that, I wouldn't worry about an actual rebuild unless there were signs of problems.

Dan,

I had a local shop rebuild mine for right at $1000, but in my mind that was money well spent after seeing how the po "jerry-rigged" everything else on my truck. (FYI: Never buy a truck from a guy that owns a junkyard.) Some of the internals, synchros I believe, had to be replaced anyway. It's one less thing to worry about on my build, plus I've never tore into a tranny/t-case before.

Good luck with your build.

Those couplers, the sleeve between the output shaft on the tranny and the input shaft on the t-case, like to explode.

Is there an online source for those or is that a GM only part?

Thanks!
