Parking pawl?
My transmission doesn't seem to want to stay in park. When linkage is removed and manually turning the shaft coming out of transmission it doesn't seem to want to engage in park so I have rulled out the linkage. I have heard that it could be the parking pawl and was wondering how deep you have to go into the tranny to fix this? Can you just remove the pan or is it way deeper than that (IE tranny removal?)

What kind of transmission is it? It's easier to fix when it's out of the truck, but all you have to do is drop the pan and remove the parking pawl assembly and if it's broke, get a new one and put that one in.

This happened to me once, but kinda in reverse. My blazer wouldn't come out of park, I should say the parking pin wouldn't release (retract?). First time it happened, I was stuck in a mud hole 25 miles from a phone. I could tell it was in drive or reverse, but it was also in park and park was tougher. I guess I coulda tried 4low and sheared the pin of, but that might have been more trouble. Anyway, after a long walk and a long wait, we got it pulled out to drier ground and had a look. Turns out, right where the shifter linkage enters the trans, there is a nut that holds the whole scene together. That nut had loosened up and caused the problem. After it was tightened back up, everything worked fine. The only problem was, there is only about 1/4 inch clearance to get a wrench on the nut, so I had to grind about half the thickness away of the wrench. This weakend the wrench so much, I could never get the nut tight enough without breaking the wrench, so it was an ongoing thing, every 4 or 5 thousand miles it would loosen up and do it again, usually in a blizzard or something.
