newbie with front floor replacement - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm new to the board and have a 72 4x4 blazer that I intend to restore. The first task I need to tackle is replacement of the driver and passenger floo. I have to strip out the interior to see how much rust is there but it looks like I need to replace the entire floor from the footwell to the where the rear foor rises up behind the seats (guess there is a cross member there). My questions is should I buy individual driver/passenger floor repair panels or the new single one piece floor replacement panel I read about? Is it avaiable and how good is it? I'm new at this restoration and will need to have my son do the welding since I don't have that skill yet.

Be prepaired to find more rust when you remove the rusted section. From what I've read, there is usually more rust hiden under the rusted areas.

Generally it is better to leave as much original as possible and patch in the rusted areas. If your floor is bad enough, you might be better off just getting the whole area replaced. Hopefully the repo part is a quality piece that actually fits well.

Welcome to the board from Philly. I think I went up through your way over NewYears, are you on the western part of the state?

Post up some pics. of the rusty area so we can see what your talking about. And no there isn't any crossmember in the area your talking about, where the floor rises up to the seat area. There is a diagonal support that runs lenght wise, ties the cowl to the step up.

I'm in the eastern part of the state, about 40 miles north of NYC. I need to remove the seats to get some pictues so it will be awhile before I can do that. I know that there are susposed to be rocker boxes but I don't have any on either side. Also are there inside rocker panels as well as outside panels? I only see the outer panels which need to be replaced. Do I replace the floor, then the rocker boxes, inner then outer rocker panels? Thanks for the welcom. I'm sure that I'll be here frquently asking questions. Is there a source for repro parts in the East so as not to pay shipping from the West coast?

Sorry, NY is loaded with Indian sounding names for cities.

It's kinda good that your rocker boxes are gone, as it makes easier access to the floor boards, and yes you work your way inside out. If you use the complete floorboard patch panel, it will come with a rear rocker panel support. There is also another pc. listed as a rocker panel backing plate, so you may want to check that out.

I used all Goodmark parts out of Louisanna or some place done south. Just ordered a rocker panel from Tabco in Ohio, so I'll let you know how the quality is.

Welcome to the board from central VT.

Get the blazer tore down and then you'll know were your starting from.

Ground zero might look pretty daunting, just take small steps and it'll work out.

thanks for the welcom. I know I'll be asking alot of questions as I go along. I had thought that I'd do a complete restoration and then drive the Blazer but now I think I'll replace the floor area so it will pass inspection in NY and drive it during the summer. Then I'll tackle replacing the front fenders and patching the bed panels and tailgate. I want to enjoy the Blazer some before doing the body work and repainting. Has anyone used a complete floor replacement patch or is even available yet?
