What did original wheels look like with 6.50x16x6 option on 71 GMC K1500

Hello,
On my glove box sticker one of the options on the truck is 6.50x16x6 tires. I'm wanting to keep my '71 GMC K1500 original including whatever wheels might have come on it new. The truck has the 'custom' trim package. With the 16" tire option, does that mean it would have had steel wheels with hub caps? Like the smaller 'GMC' in the center hub caps either painted or chromed? Does anyone have a GMC equipped with original 16" wheels that I could see? I want to get original type wheels on my truck so I need to figure out what would be proper.
Thanks much!

this is the same wheel you are talking about. these came off of a 69 or 70 GMC and was also listed on the SPID so they were original to the truck. I would have to go find the hub caps for it but I can get you a picture of a 4x4 front cap on the wheel if you need it. These wheels fit the standard hub cap that any 15 incher would have come with.

That's good info. Hubcaps go by the centers/lug pattern, not rim diameter. So,regular 1/2t hubcaps are what you need. These wheels will take some digging to find, but are out there. You can tell them a mile away by the larger vent slots, then you'll notice they seem a bit larger than usual, too. These could be found on the 67-70 2wds as well and will work on a 4wd (same wheel).

Thanks for your replies and thanks for that photo. Now, since my truck had the 6.50x16x6 tire option do you know if these same wheels were made in a 16" version? Or did trucks equipped with 16" tires use a different wheel/hub cap entirely? If possible, med.bronze, I would like a photo of an original 4x4 with front wheel with hub cap.
Thanks again!

Here ya go. 72 Highlander just bought this Chevy (I think this is the one). It has the 16" wheels. Not sure what you are asking with the 16" wheel question. That wheel pictured is a 16" wheel, the one that came with the 6.50-16 6 ply. All 1/2t hubcaps are the same. It doesn't matter what the wheel diameter is. You go by the lug pattern. All centers have the same specs with 5 and 6-lug.

A friend of mine was thinking of buying that truck off of CL a couple months ago... cool to see it here. I think it was in St Louis or something?

Was it as nice as the pics showed?

Here is the truck and spid where it lists them, and yes the hubcaps are dented.

I thought you knew better than to buy a p.o.s. with dented hubcaps. Do you know how hard those are to straighten out? Oh well...at least they're on a decent truck

Re: What did original wheels look like with 6.50x16x6 option on 71 GMC K1500

Thanks much you guys for your info. I now know what wheels to look for at my local salvage yard. By coincidence, I just picked up a perfect set of stainless hubcaps tonight off of a '71 GMC, unfortunately from a 2-wheel drive so I'll have to do some horse-tradin' on the classifieds for the front 4x4 caps.
Hey med.bronze, thanks for the wheel photo, now I know what to look for.
special-K, sorry I appeared to have a moment, but for some reason I was thinking the photo of the wheel was a 15" wheel, so that's why I was asking all of the 16" questions.
72highlander, nice truck, and thanks for the photos, they really helped as my glove box sticker shows the same tire option.
saa, you have a nice truck there.
Thanks again!

glad to help. one other thing, those 16" wheels are only 5" wide. if you happen to find them without tires on them they are stamped on the inside of the the wheel "16"x5" GM". and by inside I mean where the tire would have been.

What is the inside diameter of the stock hub caps? I found some nice ones, but haven't yet found any wheels, so figured I should make sure the hub caps I have are correct. Duh. They measure 10" id, is that right?
Thanks much!
