Eaton 5.13 thirds

Hey guys. I'm looking for an Eaton HO52 or 72 third with 5.13 gears. I keep finding eaton thirds and learning things I would have never guessed about them, but I can't find what I'm looking for, at least not yet. What's the best trucks to find 5.13 gears in?

Re: Eaton 5.13 thirds

I have that ratio in my C/30 wrecker.I`m trying to sell the truck, but would like to keep(ever been there?).I`d trade 3rds if it doesn`t sell at Carlisle Trucks this weekend.Kinda nice that they can be swapped right out and back, huh? What ratios(s) do you have?

Re: Eaton 5.13 thirds

You'd find 5.13s mostly in 1-tons and the older, the better.

Re: Eaton 5.13 thirds

Well since I am now dragging your butt to Carlisle this weekend why don't you talk it over with Tim then. Tim what kind of beer should he bring to work you over with?

I wish they made 5.38:1 ratios for them, I'd run one on my wheelin' rig.

I'm 99% sure i've got 4.56 but I'll try to find out before i leave for carlisle. I know what you mean about wanting to keep and wanting to sell. I had my hands on 3 different eatons saturday but I don't think any have 5.13 gears.

Re: Eaton 5.13 thirds

I actually used to be a member here. I was 69GMCTowrig. I moved and changed emails, etc. and lost my signin info so I couldn't get back in. I know 69towrig from college and met Special K and a few other guys this weekend at Carlisle. I'm still not dead set on running an Eaton. Depends mostly on ability to find parts and a locker.

Sorry about that Longhair. I didn't really intend for it to turn into a WTB thread but I guess it worked out that way. I was registered as 69GMCtowrig about a year ago but lost my login information. Mostly I wanted to know what trucks to look in to find what I needed since info is so scarce on these axles.

I don't know much (well anything) about the 60-66 trucks. I know Eatons were in the older trucks but I don't know the designations on the older ones. It's smaller than what you'd find in a 2 ton truck like a grain hauler or whatever. If it is a 2 speed rear it's definitely not an Eaton HO 52 or 72. If it looks like a mini dump truck axle or a ford 9 inch though it probably is.

Re: Eaton 5.13 thirds

The HO52s were 20 series and HO72s were 30 series, onlly light trucks.Over 30 seies jumps into the medium duty world and the rears get alot bigger.Very little swappable parts between MD and LT.

That's what I thought. I just wasn't sure exactly what a C40 was as far as 1 ton or was it bigger.

Re: Eaton 5.13 thirds

If I had a choice of eatons, i'd take the newest one i could find. i have 2 eaton thirds, one is a 4.57 from a 60-66 c20 with a no-spin, the other is an open 5.14 from a '68 c30 cab and chassis (motor home). the newer third has what appears to be an extra channel cast into the third for additional oil to the pinion bearings. i think this is an age thing.

just something i have observed after doing a little research on this axle.

Re: Eaton 5.13 thirds

I`m not too sure about the C/40s.They were built on the light truck platform and I guess they all have the 5 & 10 lug pattern.I`m not sure if they`d have the biggerrear or an HO72.But,up front they`d still have the A-arm suspension. So,I`m not sure where the parts were heavied up.Possibly just at the wheal bearings and brakes.
