GN 9" rearend

I'm going to post this to suspension because I post this to those who see a benefit to going with a full floater rearend.

Do many/any of you guys run a GN style Ford 9" rearend with full floater axles? These housings are stocked by quite a few places with threaded housing ends for floater hubs, and GN stuff is so well supported and cheap I don't see why not. Speedway has a kit that had everything but the calipers, brackets, and the center section for like $650. A lot of us are going with the aftermarket panhard bar's anyway, and the width at 60" is pretty in the ballpark of stock if I'm not mistaken. They're 5 on 5 hubs too. I guess the one thing that would be difficult is the parking brake would be hard/impossible to do (not a big deal to me not to have a parking brake).

What are the down sides? The upsides I see are: a simi affordable 9" housing, full floaters are more reliable in case of axle breaking and road racing applications, no brake kickback issues seen with c-clip axles. I've always thought this idea would be great if you wanted to have a couple pumpkins for taking autocross/road racing with some 3:73 gears ect , and another with a spool and some 4:10's since swapping them would be pretty easy.

Re: GN 9" rearend

As long as you run a 31 spline or higher i doubt you'll break a axle. But see what quickperformance.com will cost you they are cheaper then the big names like currie. For rear brakes you can have a parking brake kor3.com has a few kits the cheapest is 676 bucks.Or if you want cheaper i can give you a link to mustang cobra rear disc they are 11 inch single piston with parking brakes.Only downside to that one will be redrilling the rotors.

Re: GN 9" rearend

You'd have to get brakes with weld on brackets that would fit the housing/rotors it's designed for... which are just the grand national brakes, which should be pretty cheap and plentiful.

Re: GN 9" rearend

The grand national used alum drums,For road racing i would run rear disc for for the extra braking.Kor3 has some bolt on kits for a a 9 inch housing or the mustang cobra you can get the brackets that bolt on the rest you can get any auto parts store.

Re: GN 9" rearend

Using 5 x 5" hubs is easy. get the speedway, or howe, or ..... steel hats, and use 12" rotors. Use a weld-on caliper mount for mid-size GM calipers and use the cadilac caliper with E-brake. Works great.
