strobe/parade lights

When I get the '87 back in order I'll be using it for most of the PGR funerals/escorts I do. I've seen some vehicles that have the head & tail lights that can strobe, which I'd love to have available when bringing up the rear of our bikes. Anyone know how the conversions works, or what's involved?

Re: strobe/parade lights

From seeing all the police cars that we've fixed, the strobe is just another bulb that is added to the light housing. They take the lamp and drill a hole in it so the strobe can stick in it, then they glue or silicone it in place or use little screws if the strobe socket has a shoulder on it, and wire it up.
I use to have a "Wig Wag" box around here, made your headlamps alternate side to side. I'll dig around and see if I can find it for you. I tried to give it away to some of the local cops a few years ago, but they all turned their noses up at it.

But back to adding strobes to a square. It would be pretty easy to do in the front park lamps on a stock 87, or even one that has an updated 89-91 suburban front end. The tail lamps would be just as easy to add, put it over on the side next to the park light socket or something.

You can almost make out the strobe in the photo here, I circled it. The strobe stuck in from the bottom.

Re: strobe/parade lights

Randy is correct, you will have to drill your light housings and install bushings, etc. They are called hide away strobe systems. I want one too. Posted a link to some decent priced systems below. Whelen probably makes the best but the systems are 3 times the price of these.

Re: strobe/parade lights

Thanks guys, good to know it's relatively painless. Randy I'll take you up on the Wig Wag box if you come across it. Thanks for the link Jason, those aren't too bad.

For the front I wouldn't mind adding another housing like the turn signal uses behind the grill. In the back I'd definitely want to put it in the taillight.

Re: strobe/parade lights

I installed a set of these when I was about 12 on my go kart. Piece of cake. Just drill the hole in the head light with a sharp bit, and install.

Re: strobe/parade lights

The Whelen/emergency services type use a 1" hole. Use a hole saw and go slow. I put a set on my S10 when I was on the local EMT service. Worked great and was very visible, but dont get caught playing with them. IMO spend the extra money and get a whelen setup, it will last forever and you might be able to find a local shop that has decomissioned some cop cars that will sell you a setup cheaper.

For what your wanting to do stay with a lower power unit to also save some cash. This 60w 4 head kit should do you fine for what your looking to do:
