Finally working on the truck

I had to take on a part time second job to get some money to work on my truck, but I finally started back on it. Rolled the GMC front clip off of it (you can do it by yourself if your careful) and pulled the engine. Seems the rear main isn't leaking but everything else is. Bought gaskets, timing set, harmonic balancer (stripped thread in old one, and I think the outer ring has slipped), new alternator for serpentine setup. Sure is easy to pull the engine with the clip off. Gonna fix all the leaks, put serpentine setup on it (which covers the internal reg. alt), electric fans, relays for fans and headlights and try to piece together the 72 chevy front clip for it (not in any better shape than my GMC clip but the GMC stuff will look better on my 4x project). All that and work 12 hour nights.
Oh yeah, I'm gonna put a new high volume oil pump on it while it's out too just 'cuz I can.

Krue, You finally finished cutting all that wood. Too bad the firewood market is saturated around here.

Re: Finally working on the truck

If you are going to install a high volume oil pump are you going to use a larger capacity oil pan? If you are using a stock 5 qt. pan it is possible to get all the oil up in the engine and have the pump suck air and lose pressure. If the engine is new and don't have any buildup it will work but keep an eye on gauge and watch for fluctuation which means oil starved. Do a little research if you can before you install it.

REALLY? I haven't seen this, so I'm interested in your experience. I've used the Melling pumps with stock pans and haven't experienced this. More detail, please! Scary

Re: Finally working on the truck

Good deal! I can relate to the lack of time. They announced a week ago that starting this week we were to work 5 days 40 hours(as long as work is complete). At the end of today I'll have almost 70 hours. In case you didn't notice I implied I'm working today, day 6.

Look forward to seeing your work soon. I'm going to try to take some time when we have the cookout at chickenwings in Jackson. You MS. guys planning on coming?

Hey my truck is like krue's if you see the front it is a GMC but if you see the hubcaps or tailgate it is a Chevy.

Sorry about taking so long to answer I went parts chasing and was gone all day. You can get oil pumps in standard, high pressure, high volume, or high pressure/high volume configurations. If your engine is new, or clean and all the oil returns open you won't have trouble. If you buy a old truck/car and it has low oil pressure a lot of the shade tree types will offer a quick fix by installing new hiperformance pumps and yes it will raise your pressure reading at the gauge. But if they didn't clean out the return holes so the oil can get back to the pan quickly it will run its self out of oil. From reading your past posts I'm sure that you wood never have that problem as you check and make sure it's right before putting it in service. I was just trying to give Krue a heads up on something that I've seen bite people in the butt too many times. He seems to have enough to deal with without replacing an engine. Thanks
