Smile 318 in a 59'

i have the opportunity to drop a lightly used 318 from a plymouth satellite, my 1959 GMC currently has a 270 straight six in it that runs well, my biggest concerns are gas economy, and mounting in my truck, because the engine is obviously a mopar engine i might have to do some custom fab, i don't have to pay any money for the 318 it is my fathers, i just need a second opinion

THANKS!!

I doubt the 318 will get better gas mileage. You will need change the gears, Then the 270 would probably get better mileage than the 318.

the 318 has a whole drivetrain attached to it, all i know is that it is an automatic, wonder if that could fit in place of the manual 3 on the tree that is currently in it without major fab

Your biggest job will be fabricating motor mounts and a tranny mount. Lots of other small stuff like adapting the throttle linkage to the Mopar carb, wiring, drive line, exhaust, shifter....and so on. Not alot of hard work just a bunch of little details.

You might consider changing the rear end (or gears) before you do an engine swap. I'm guessing it probably has some pretty steep gears.

Re: 318 in a 59'

I agree about the mileage, the 318 will be worse than the six. Why not a later model GM 6?? I think for the time and money you will spend adapting the Mopar to GMC you could get a newer GM 6 and change out the rear gears. If its the original 3 speed they came with overdrive, but they are pretty hard to find. Or change out the trans for a newer OD 4 speed auto. Lots of options, unless you just want the challenge and being different factor, I'd stick with GM. Also, Mopar parts are usually more expensive than GM because of after market sales numbers. If you want the Mopar, get a 340 or 360, probably same gas mileage with more go. Free does not always equate with inexpensive, I have years of personal experience to back that up! I just spent two days mocking up a free steering column I got and just can't get it to work, its simply too long, but I'm pretty stubborn and had to try!
