‘73-‘80 and ‘81-‘91 Dashboard Interchangeability

I’ve been operating under the assumption that the sheetmetal dashboards are the same from ‘73-‘91 and that the ‘73-‘80 and ‘81-‘91 dashpads and instrument clusters are interchangeable. Can anyone confirm this?

I’m updating the interior in my '77 to a ‘81-‘91and want to make sure it’s as simple as swapping dashpads and clusters and that I do not need to swap in an actual ’81-’91 steel dash.

I was told all you have to change is the a/c ducts where they come out in the center and right side. Not sure if that's correct but that's what i was told when i asked the question.

You do not have to swap the steel dash, or even the vents, as far as I know. To swap the cluster, you probably will need to repin the dash connector, and add a wire to the connector for the oil pressure sender to the '77 harness. There will be a hole in the later dash pad for the VIN plate, too

I plan to swap the whole harness over from the '91, but thanks.

Re: ‘73-‘80 and ‘81-‘91 Dashboard Interchangeability

Your 77 has a dash mounted wiper switch and the 91 harness is set up for the column mounted wiper switch so you will need to either wire the 77 dash mounted plug to the 91 harness or use the column out of the 91. If you use the gauge bezel out of the 91 there is no hole for the dash wiper switch and the headlight switch needs to be moved up about 3/4-1in.
