Don't count on GM to provide us with parts
Well, i went to the local Chevy dealer to try and get a turn signal switch for my '72, after the auto parts store couldn't get anyone. I walked up to the parts desk, and there was a woman working it. I told her that i needed a turn signal switch for a '72 C10, and i got "I'm sorry, we can't get parts for anythig that old anymore". I got a starter brace from them about a year ago, and they looked it up on a microfilm machine. Well, the got rid of that, and now only deal in parts for newer vechiles! Is this just a thing with my Chevy dealer, or did they all stop carrying parts for our trucks????

Advance Auto, Autozone both have it, but $41.00. I just ordered a complete one from Chevy Duty, LCM also has it, for $29.00

I asked them for a brake hose for a 72 C-20 and they said they don't go back that far.

They can still get some parts. They will have to look them up in the books. I still get parts from them. If they don't have it in stock or its discontinued ask them to check what other dealers have in stock. I just bought a tilt shifter housing off the shelf of a dealer in Florida. My local dealer found it for me.Part was discontinued last year.

My local GM parts guy will still look stuff up in the old books and do dealer search for me. I try to stop when it's not real busy and I NEVER complain about the price- I just wish they'd include some KY jelly or buy me a drink first.

A good parts guy helps a lot. Especially if you have a good relationship (ie he doesn't charge you list!)but fact is that a lot of parts for our truck are discontinued and NOS has been bought by dealers like LMC, Chevy Duty or even some of our vendors. You'll always be able to get parts, but maybe not from GM.

I buy tons of stuff at Advance AutoParts. I just got wheel cylander rebuild kits for my 49 GMC panel truck. They did have to look it up in the book. But i buy so much they dont complain when i ask for old stuff. If they dont want to look it up for me i will go behind the darn counter and do it myself.

If you know the part number for the GM item you want go to www.partsvoice.com and enter as a guest and input the part number and you might find a dealership that has one.

I am getting my turn signal switch from GMCPauls for $29.95. I don't know if my local Hughes and Coates Chevy Dealers sells parts for our truck. I have never tried them. On that turn signal switch I know that NAPA and O' Reilly didn't have them but CarQuest could of ordered me one but it was $49.
Another thing that parts stores don't always have for our trucks is washerpumps. O' Reilly was able to order me one. It worked great but came in a banged up box and on it it said manufactured in a 1977... LOL> It was new, just sitting around for a while. ------------------ Nick Rodenberg Wellington, MO http://nickrod.port5.com You can click on "My 72 Chevy Truck" I have a 72 Cheyenne 10 with a V8 350 and a TH-350 auto-tranny. Chose to do better job and be behind schedule instead of 1/2 doing it and it looking like junk.

Yes, I was able to get an original grille, with old GM sticker still on it, and inner fenders, and a tailgate, old dealerships with large unorganized parts barns can yield some treaure.
It also helps when the owner of the dealer also collects old cars/trucks, so they understand. The only drawback is when you call and get some person who only can look at a computer screen. But, that happens at all parts stores sometimes.

Its not a GM thing, its a dealership thing and it also depends on how willing the parts person is to help you. My local GM dealership has been really helpful in finding parts for me, of course, they have all the right books (they started keeping them right under the counter instead of in back since I've been asking so many questions). I've also struck out with certain parts guys, but have had great results with other parts guys at the same dealership with the same part. Be persistent and check with a few dealerships before you give up.

I agree w/Bluec10, gotta be persistant. If you find one person that will take the time to pull out the old books, get to know them. Build a friendly relationship with them. I recently was lookin for a part that was out of stock. My parts guy looked through three books and finally came up with a part number and gave me the name of a local "classic" parts supplier that in fact had the part. Keep trying.

I bought a GM dealer book for 46-72 trucks. When I go into my dealer (30% discount..) I have the parts numbers ready - they appreciate that, and I am sure that I get what I want.

Try a different dealer! The dealer nearest my home is useless, but my dealer is great! The parts book idea is what I do too. Never be in a hurry. And a dozen cookies once in a while never hurts

God, I don't want to even talk about this...I've had so many arguments with parts stores lately because of my carburetor. I don't even want to even think about going to a dealership. It would be like pouring salt into a wound with me right now.
