Thoughts on a manual transmission.....

Setup:
1968 C10 SWB, Boosted 2006 LQ4 (650-700hp), AWD

Have a 2wd 4L80 with 80k miles on it, but the temptation to go manual 6 speed is overwhelming. Trading for a used T56 may be an option, but not sure if it can handle that power without being completely rebuilt and that's not truly an option right now.

This is a work in progress. So, thoughts and suggestions? And would 2800-3000 stall be satisfactory? Street and strip truck, not a racing setup.

Thanks.

Re: Thoughts on a manual transmission.....

4L80E with some work would be the go-to. 6L80E would be my choice if I could find one, pretty sure they fit great, just expensive unless you can do the electronics yourself.

Can't tell you about stall without knowing more about the motor. Centrifugal would want a lot of stall since they're weak sauce down low and charge up top, whereas a positive displacement blower makes a lot of torque down low and you don't really need a long converter.

If you're going the manual route, I have two TKO-600s in cars. One in a 69 Camaro LS3, one in a 69 Pontiac 502, both are great. Highly recommended, just not that cheap.

Re: Thoughts on a manual transmission.....

What transfer case are you planning on using for AWD? I don't think any of the AWD stuff actually came with a T56. Not sure how the lengths/layouts would work.

I've have a NV149 being converted to 32 spline right now. It will mate up to the 4L80. I can get another new input shaft that is 27 spline that can mate up to the T56 if I go that route.

Yeah, why I went with 4L80 first.

Re: Thoughts on a manual transmission.....

I wanted manual and ended up purchasing a TKO 500 5 speed to put behind my 5.3

Re: Thoughts on a manual transmission.....

The 65 project I picked up recently has the AR5 installed behind a 5.3.

Re: Thoughts on a manual transmission.....

You will grenade the T56, stay auto! Or no hard launches and roll into it, but that won't be any fun.

People usually swap the 6l80 out in favor or a 4l80. I went with a beefier RWD 4l85e for panel truck also doing a 6.0 and turbo.

Re: Thoughts on a manual transmission.....

I have had both. Like you I really wanted a T56 in my truck so when I had a chance to get one I stuck it in the corner waiting till my 4l60e was done. Once the converter went I did the swap. I had a good clutch but it was not enough and still slipped. Now that may have been a combination of my (and my son's) driving style plus the heavy truck plus the turbo power.
I then picked up a great deal on a built 4l80. I tell you that transmission is a lot of fun with a small converter it works very well. The manual was fun and is a great fit in a car but with my truck I just couldn't get it all to work the way I needed and wanted.
I vote the 4l80, I dont think you will need another one.
