1989 5 speed in 1987 chev ?

hey guys first post on the forum but i've been browsing for a few months now. i am currently working on a project truck its a 1987 chevy short wheel base 2wd with the 4.3 tbi in it. i have a 1979 350 here i am planning to convert to tbi.

I also have a 1989 chevy step side 4x4 short wheel base with a 305, 5 speed tranny in it.. i have been using it as a winter beater for a few years now but the chassis is rotted out and i was wondering can i use the 4x4 5 speed tranny out of it in the 2wd 87? or is this not possible due to the 4x4. the 87 is automatic and everything I've owned is standard.. just don't feel right haha!!

Thanks for looking!

Cory

welcome to the site! i'm pretty sure that wont work, because the 4x4 trans is bolted directly to the transfer case-it wont have the correct output/tailshaft to accommodate the slip yoke it needs to work with you're driveshaft. you're probably better off parting the 4x4 out and using the funds to buy a 2wd trans instead. i plan on putting that same 2wd trans in my truck down the road someday!

The later pedals won't be a direct bolt in. I am in the process of converting my 83 to manual and using a world class t5. Hydraulic set up its not that hard if you use the right parts.
