So I went to the parts store and they told me if I have the skinney shoes, I'm in luck, it I have the wide ones, I'm screwed.
They also told me that my wheel cylinders will be like 50 bucks each...depending on what size they are...no listing for a rebuild kit.

So here goes...where can I locate the hard to find items...asuming I'll be needing them.
Am I able to just unbolt the entire backing plate and brake assembly off, and install a later model....if so, any ideas on what to look for. What would I do for drums/bearings/hubs.
I'd like to replace this HO72, but it isn't really do-able at the moment....but the brakes are kerfagled, so i have to do something.
Ideas?
Part numbers?
Web sites?
hand grenade...please?

I am in the same boat when they go bad again I am swapping to a later model rear. When the truck was redone I got 2 rear wheel cylinders new shoes new ball joints in the front cost $856 they found the last 2 rear wheel cylinders at an old ford dealer that had some chevy NOS on the shelf. If I had of known then what I know now there would be a 14bolt Full floater with a locker there now.

i got a napa part number for the wide shoes and they have em in stock on there web site heres the link welp nevermind they wont let me link but go to www.napaonline.com RTSTS320 thats the number for the wide shoes

There are sources larger trucks use that "re-line" your shoes.Check it out.

what have you got for a rear diff? 10 bolt & 12 bolt truck diffs interchange backing plates. I have a set of junk 10 bolt ones here at work that I can measure the bolt pattern & etc. if interested.

TRY NAPA ... THIS SUMMER I REBUILT THE COMPLETE FRONT END & DID THE REAR BRAKES ON MY 69 ONE TON. NOT ONLY DID THEY CARRY THEM (WIDE SHOES) BUT HAD THEM IN STOCK. I SURE LIKE NAPA FOR KNOWLEDGEABLE, HELPFUL PEOPLE.

I did the rear brakes in my C30 dually last spring. I couldn't get a rebuilt brake cylinder from Napa. They ordered it twice and it was either too small or monster big. I gave up and rebuilt it myself. The kit was cheap and there wasn't much pitting in the bore of the cylinder. The bearings were the hard part to find in my case. They ended up having 1 outer on the east coast and an inner on the west coast. It took 3 UPS shipments to get a L+R set together.

Cool, some good info here.
I'll have to see if I can yank a drum off tomorow and get a measurement and see what I have.
As far as what rear I have, this is a one ton, no 10 bolt/12 bolt stuff...this is the HO72 Eaton/Cop rear.

I was told you have to pull the axle out to get that drum off. I need to replace the wheel cylinder that the previous owner broke the bleeder off on my 70 Longhorn. Any truth to the axle deal? I have not not looked at it.

68C15...those aren't cheap around here. Asuming you can locate one to begin with.
Bozracer... pop off the hub cap and remove the 8 3/4 inch headed bolts, tap the center with a ball peen hammer and then pull it out. You have now removed the axle.
The fun part is removing the hub, which is the next step.

I think full-floaters are easier to work on.Go for it bozracer.Once shafts are pulled,it`s like the f/e(spindle).68c15,this ain`t no 14-bolt,ain`t even a Dana.These things get a lil`complicated on parts,less`n you got a knowledgeable parts man(or person).They`re getting even harder to find than the parts.My advise:when find your parts,file the p/ns.You may not expect to need them again.But further on,if you do,it`ll only be worse.And,it could help thr next guy down the line.

Don't know about "full floater" stuff, but I have a 14 bolt rear in my 71 1 ton Longhorn, and when I wanted to change gear ratio last year, the differential place I went to said that the lowest gear they could get for mine was 3:91. I've got 4:10 now. Got another 8 lug, 14 bolt rear from a later model given to me by a friend, but it's the same 4:10 gears. Anyone know of a good donor vehicle to check?
