Talking Re: Need tips on installing vent windows

Eric,
It is the most pain in the butt thing to learn, but I will try to explain it the best I can.
First and formost, buy that blue masking tape and tape the opening of the door where the glass goes in from the hole where the lock button comes through all the way to the other side THICKLY.. Longways so you dont scratch your doors.

Then install the window track shaft with that little bracket on the bottom thats giving you all the trouble in first, , , from the inside of the door--- not the outside.

The wrap the top of the wind window with a shop towel and tape to hold it. Then its a matter of sliding it down until it stops (this will require some twisting) then pushing the wind window toward the outside until it is lined up with the track in the door. Then you have to push it in toward the front of the truck.
It will be tight at the end there, but believe me when you find that right path you will know it, because it just kind of falls in place.
For me the trick is installing them from the inside of the door vs the outside.
I've done so many now I can honestly say that it can be done without ever touching the door enough to scratch it.
I have included some pictures for an Illustration.
PM me if you have any trouble.

Tony

Thats exactly what I was looking for.. THANK YOU!!!

I am going to use the pics I took installing the rubber and these pics, and ad them to the Vent Window thread in the FAQ to give it a more detailed how-to.

Re: Need tips on installing vent windows

Before you put the windows and vent windows in, get some tape and tape up all the surrounding areas to protect your paint.

Re: Need tips on installing vent windows

Matt, I think the rubber is the easy part.. But yes you will have to drill out the rivets if you replace the felt tracks...which I recommend if you are going that far..

Re: Need tips on installing vent windows

Hey Tony,

Those are some great pics/tips. I'm doing the same job this weekend and this will be a huge help. One question as I am replacing my regulators at the same time, should the vents go in before the window or vice versa?

Also, you must be a more patient man than I am, I was ready to throw those vent window across the garage when I was replacing the rubber.

Re: Need tips on installing vent windows

Ole Blue,
Hey Fellow Houstonian... Go Astros!!!!!!
No not more patient, I failed to mention the hundred or so that I crushed under my boot because I scratched my paint !!!!!
It doens't matter about the regulators, just have them in the totally down position.
What part of Houston, I am in Cypress out 290

Re: Need tips on installing vent windows

Did my rubber with a regular pop rivet gun as suggested by other members.. worked great. Did them both in about an hour.

Re: Need tips on installing vent windows

Hey Cypress, I'm up in Kingwood. Go Stros!

Redhead, after two failed attempts and a lot of sweat, I finally gave in and got myself a pop rivet gun and finished in less than an hour.

Re: Need tips on installing vent windows

Hey Tony,

I just wanted to thank you again for the pics and directions on the vent windows. I put my doors all back together again yesterday. Installing the new regulators was a pain in A_ _ but at least the vent windows went in easy. I only wound up with a few small scratches (even with taping).
