Need some info from the GMC guys

So in talking with a friend the idea was hatched to swap the front clip back off my Sub for the 67/68 GMC front. I got the core from a 69 gmc with all the wiring and headlights with all the hardware. What I need to know is if this will work for my plan. My Sub has a full 68 front clip so the hood and fenders will work but I don't know if the core will work. I know in the chevy's the headlight are mounted on a base that moves them to fit the 69-72 depth grill. I have no money in it at this point so if it will not work I'm not out anything. When I get home I can get pic's for what I have. I'm just looking for some info on how to ID what I need. Any help would be great.

If I am reading this right, all you need is the 67 or 68 GMC grill, center support and top bar. The core support and all of it's hardware will bolt right up to your existing parts. WES

Re: Need some info from the GMC guys

From what I have been told the core should work for what I want. As for the grill and top bar. I was looking at a friends 67 GMC and it looks like that bar that the hood bumpers and latch mount to could be cut from the top of a chevy 67/68 grill. I you could by a new 67 grill at LMC but I'm going huntting for parts.

Re: Need some info from the GMC guys

It's not a seperate piece. The 67/68 GMC top bar is rivetted to the 67/68 GMC grill, so that is removable. However the 67/68 chevy is stamped all out of 1 piece of steel so the top bare can not be removed without cutting. If you cut it off, you won't be able to rivet it to the 67/68 GMC grill. WES

Re: Need some info from the GMC guys

I'm wondering just exactly you are starting with. What year is your Sub? It's a GMC? Wes told you what you need to know. First of all, yes, all the GMC headlights are in the same location and all the grilles swap with all the core supports and fenders. All you need to go from 69-72 GMC to 67/68 GMC is the hood and top bar. The top bar acts as a body filler between the hood and grille. In '69 when the hoods got shorter,Chevy made longer fenders and GMC added a grille surround to fill the gap created by shortening the hood. The only difference in core supports between 67/68 and 69-72 is the 67/68s use a gravel pan that requires mounting locations across the bottom. But,I don't see why you can't just skip that and go like the 69-72s do. I believe you would need the 69-72 center support.

Re: Need some info from the GMC guys

I have 2 or 3 of that bottom plate and bolts to the core and the grill at the bottom. (kept getting diffrent ones to fit the 68 clip) The Sub is a 1970 chevy but when I got it there was no front clip so I found most of what I needed to install a 68 clip. I have been looking for a full 67 or 68 GMC truck to get the clip from so I don't have to cut or mod anything. It's good to know the info on the core. So looks like the grill will be the next thing to hunt down. Do you know if the latch for the hood on the 67/68 chevy would work for the GMC? Its the same hood and looks like its corect. I have always liked the look of the GMC front. Thanks for your help with all this.

Re: Need some info from the GMC guys

The only difference in the latches is all the GMC latch handles are offset to one side to get around the center upright of the grille.
