67-72 Rear Bumper On Fleetside

When using a 67-72 rear fleetside bumper, do the 67-72 rear bumper brackets work on a 64-66 chassis? Checking to see if using a 67-72 bumper and brackets make it a bolt-up affair... Also, are you re-drilling the brackets to move bumper in closer to body?

Re: 67-72 Rear Bumper On Fleetside

The '67-'72 brackets bolt right up to a '64-'66 chassis. Believe it or not, you actually have to shim the bumper slightly to get it away from the bed because the gap is really tight.

In my opinion, the '67-'72 fleetside is the best looking rear bumper for our trucks and it bolts right up. Gotta love Chevy.......

Re: 67-72 Rear Bumper On Fleetside

I cut up the parts I had because it would have been a pain to return. I originally had '62 bumper but after 3 bad chrome ones I opted for this. I spaced mine out 1/4".
Does hang out a bit at top. I fabed the box as well. Used my plate frame with light.

Re: 67-72 Rear Bumper On Fleetside

I'm at work, so I can't post pics, but I have a bunch to show in my build thread. As an added bonus, I found an Early Classic hidden hitch on Craigslist for $80 and it was brand new. It's for a '67-'72 but it works great on our trucks. It's secured with 6 bolts, and two were already in the frame. Just had to drill the remaining 4. I drilled a square hole in the backside of the license plate box and used a spring loaded license plate frame from a '60s GM car. You can't even tell that there's a hitch on the truck.

Here's my 64, or at least only picture I have at work. I like the tucked close look of the 67-72 bumper on these trucks.

Re: 67-72 Rear Bumper On Fleetside

I have also purchased a 67-72 rear bumper , it'll go on my 65 when it's reassembled . I think they look a lot better and tidy up the rear end .

Re: 67-72 Rear Bumper On Fleetside

Thanks for info, unfortunately my bumper was damaged in shipment... now I have to wait to see 'what they are going to do'....seems every vendor is nothing more than a drop shipper for these trucks.

Re: 67-72 Rear Bumper On Fleetside

Does the 67-72 bumper actually sit higher, or does the design of it make it appear that way? For those of us with rear exhaust exits that tuck up under the 60-66 bumpers, would there be a gap between the exhaust and bumper if we went with a 67-72 bumper?

Re: 67-72 Rear Bumper On Fleetside

Even if incorrect, these bumpers really do look good (cough betterthanstock cough) on our trucks! Can 64-66 brackets be made to work with the later bumper? EDIT: I now visualize a narrow filler attaching to the top of the brackets completing the look. Yeah, I know ...Blasphemy!

Re: 67-72 Rear Bumper On Fleetside

If I remember correctly, I could have probably gotten the inner 64-66 brackets to work, but the outers sit way too far out.

I didn't want to go the hidden hitch route, but found a cheap drop hitch at a swap meet. The Valley hitch that many others have used.

Stop posting pics! You are going to make me buy one of these things. They look sooo good. I venture over to 67 parts to check for chrome patina rear bumpers every few months...

Mine's on there with some homemade brackets. Been there since at least 1980.

Re: 67-72 Rear Bumper On Fleetside

I ordered brackets for a 67-72 and had to drill new holes in the 66. First holes 1" in from the end of frame snugs everything up real nice.

Love the later bumper on the Fleetside. Still keep my eyes open for a rough one that would look ok on my truck.
