61 apache rear

does anybody know what rear i can put in my truck that matches stock one

The only one that will match is one from another 60-62. No others will fit with out some modifying basicly new axle seats or saddles, and a panhard rod. The 60-62 have a difrent frame then 63-66 . Keep this in mind if you order a panhard ( some call it a trac rod) or an axle kit from CPP , they will not work with a 61.

I've just bought a '62 C-10 with the 3.90 rear gears, and I already own a 1968 12 bolt with 3.07 gears.
Is it just a panhard rod mod to swap?

No, the mount spacing for the trailing arms is different on the 12 bolt. If you want a bolt-in swap with friendlier gearing, look for a Dana rear out of a 60-62 GMC 1/2 ton.

Well, the odds of finding a 60-62 GMC in Maine are a little low, but I'll keep looking. Do ALL GMC 1/2 tons have the Dana rear?
I am able to weld, and cut, how hard is it to just alter the 12 bolt?

Just curious-wouldn't a '62 with an automatic have better gearing? I'm too lazy to dig out my book to check. I'm thinking of getting a 60-62 (1/2T)automatic rear to put in my '61 3/4T, and getting the spindles off the same truck to make it a 1/2T truck.

Chevy offered a 3.38 ratio as a factory option. I don't think it was a stick vs automatic choice. However, after looking at a LOT of these trucks, I have never been able to find one with a 3.38, and that included some automatics. If you are going parts shopping, the center sections will swap 55-62.

I bolted a 1971 rear axle in my 60 last summer without any modifcations

I would just move the trailing arm mounts on the '68 12 bolt, add a panhard bar mount, and put that 12 bolt under your truck.

What is the width difference for the trail arm mounts? I guess I could measure the 62, but I haven't even picked it up yet. That'll be another story....

To the best of my recollection, the mounts were off by about two inches when I measured them. I talked to a guy on another board who said he was able to spring the trailing arms enough to bolt in a later rear. This was just so he could tow a parts truck to his garage. There was no way he was going to drive it like that.

If you add the cost of installation parts (bearings, seals, etc) and have to pay someone to set them up, I don't know if it's such a good deal. I installed an overdrive transmission for less than the gears alone cost. A rear end swap would certainly cost less even if you paid someone to do the welding.

C30 should have leaf springs and an Eaton HO-72. If you have 4.88 gears you don't have an Eaton, as they are 4.10/4.57/5.14 (5.14 was the stock C30 ratio). Common swaps for the Eaton would be the optional 4.10 third member (what I have in my truck), or a complete swap for a 14 bolt.

If you post a picture it's easy to tell if you have an Eaton; the rear cover is perfectly round and it's a third member type with a welded steel housing instead of cast.

I will take a picture in a few minutes the old man may have been wrong on his numbers. When you swapped in the 4.10 third member how did your I am assuming 235 like it? Its a panel sorry for leaving that out.

Here's a picture of one of mine showing the Eaton rear:

Mine has had the 4.10 in it since I bought the truck. I bought it with a 283 and recently swapped in a 250 six; SM420 ("granny") four speed behind both. I also have fairly large (32" tall) 235/85R16 rear tires.

It does pretty good overall IMO. FWIW, 45MPH is 2,000RPM, 55MPH is a little over 2,400RPM, and 70MPH is a little less than 3,100RPM (I normally drive 55 or 60-65MPH). Does good driving around by itself; towing (around 12,000LBS gross combined weight the times I've done it--7,000LB or so trailer) it does ok, but doesn't like hills all that much (which is to be expected IMO).

I have dubbed her the name of Slow Ride. I just bought a tach to put in it so I am unable to tell you the rpms she is turning but I do know that she is wide open doing 45 and is screaming at 50. I usually only run about 40 so the cabin noise is minimal and I can still talk to my passenger. The truck is stock as can be. The only thing I have wanted to change to the drive line was the rear end. Now that I know that I can just swap the third member that will make her dreams of running out on the highway come true. But I have looked and it doesnt seem that aftermarket is favorable to that eaton. Do you have any idea where I can find a 4.10 at so I can ditch the 5.13
