talk about no work one day too much the next..need opinions

hey guys, i was layed off from the welding shop a while back and rode ei for a while then this week i started applying for jobs to hold me over till spring when the iron shop gets busy, well today i started at big o tire- just swapping tires for winters and balancing...just stuff like that, i get home and a place called truck outfitters called and wants to have an interview but i told em i started working today but still want to go for an interview, so im going by tomorrow after work to talk to the guy, then also there is shaw cable, a buddy can get me a job there if i want, its full time plus commission, you sit on your ass 8 hours a day calling people its 10 bucks starting. what i want your opinion on is what should i do? shaw cable is by far the best for money and its the easiest work without a doubt but its a split shift, 930-100 then 4-830, the other 2 (tire shop and truck outfitters) are straight 8 hours, outfitters is also 10 bucks an hour and i find out about the tire shop tomorrow, what should i do? go where the money is or do what i like most? im not looking for a career thats for damn sure, just something for the winter to hold me over till i go back to the shop to weld/fabricate...sorry for the rambling...lets hear what you guys think

If you are looking for a terporary job, go for the most money! Since you won't be staying there for a long time, job satisfaction isn't that important.

go with truck outfitters, at least u will be workin on trucks, plus maybe u will get a deal on truck accessories

thanks for the quick responses guys, unless big o pays more then the truck outfitters im goin to the outfitters, but shaw cable is same wage is outfitters but its got commission on top of the reg wage, which is real good, my buddy makes about 500 a month commission...so its a tough choice

Go with what you love. Split shifts seem like they would suck!! I say go with outfitters. It gives you time to work on your truck too!!!

man I wish there were jobs like that here, I am lucky to be working full time installing stereos and alarms, there is just no jobs, not even min wage, fast food, everything is taken, but hey I make 10.50 an hour

Derek if you don't mind split shifts, go with shaw, its a cold bit#h in winter changing tires,and your dirty as hell all day, outfitters might be fine but it'll be cold to with door open and closed all day, save your wrenchin time for your own stuff, maybe cause I'm older I'd go for the cushy job, and if it gets a little slow those shops will lay you off ,just my opinion

There are lots of mechanic jobs in edmonton, i just took an offer of 28/hour flat rate. The market here is crazy. Jobs r everywhere. i left my old job to go to midas in september and they werent busy enough so i took the big $$$ at canadian tire

casey-im leaning towards shaw too, my mom thinks im crazy but hell if big o was more of a shop and i could learn things id probably stay, but its just changing tires and that gets old fast. outfitters is hard to say right now, ill still check it out incase shaw doesnt pan out, but im kinda stuck inbetween a rock and a hard place right now. thanks for the help guys

i worked at Cali Concept for a while and I learned alot. It also taught me that working on other poeples trucks all day made me not wanna work on mine on the weekend. i also use to do change tires in highschool, was fun but not much to learn. Since this is temp I say go with outfitters.

Go with the money. if working on trucks with out a lift and on concrete you might want to invest on a nice set of knee pads cause concrete kills knees.

If you can sit in a heated office and be guarnteed $10/hr + commission, you need to jump on the opportunity.

I know little of the welding industry, but I do know that an underwater welder on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico (TX, LA, MS, AL, FL), you can make $65/hr USD. Might be worth looking in to taking the training necessary to make some good money for 10 years, then move back home and retire

Isn't the average life expectancy for an undewater welder like 3 years?
Dunno if that is true or not....just what i have always heard.

lucas, from what ive heard underwater welding is one of the most dangerous jobs out there, my welding instructor in trades school did a bit but didnt like it at all, he also said that some outfits like to teach from from the get go, since its a whole different process they dont want your regular welding habits to rub off, dont know how true this is though

Working on trucks would be better than changing tires , as you said that gets old quick . Sitting on my butt does too , only way I would want a desk job, is with a computer, so I could come in here and chat....lol... I love working on trucks .....as some has said ...the discounts would be nice . Never know who you meet in truck shops either , great job may come along. Thats my 3 cents ..... good luck with your decision .... jyd

10 an hour plus commission may seem like a good deal but think about how many P*ssed off people there will be on the other end of the phone . People in general don't like telemarketers ( at least thats what it's sounds like you'd be doing ) Look at the National do not call registry that's coming down HAd one here in NY for quite a while and it works for us . PLus the split shift really sucks Ask my ex wife My vote is for the truck place . But hey it's your life do what you think best .

hey guys, little update for anyone interested, i went to the interview at the truck outfitters, went awesome, we got sidetracked and started talking about my 67 project, the guy interviewing me had a 68 way back when, anyways i think im getting the job, i went ahead and quit the tire shop cause it was only min wage and didnt feel like doing that. im going to hopefully get this job at the truck shop and if it doesnt work out then ill go to shaw if that door is still open. btw when i was in outfitters today they had so much sweet chit, like airbags, suspension you name it, i bet i could get some killer deals working there...
