Should I have my cab blasted? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have disassembled my 67 cab now. I will be fabbing brackets for my new dash and AC components in the next few days. After I get that done, I want to get the cab ready to paint. The local sand/concrete supplier has a sand blasting service. Would this be a good idea or will it damage the cab? What about media blasting? Not really sure what that is or if it is offered there. Just looking for opinions on the subject. Thanks

Plastic media would be a lot more "freindly" with the tin. We had a guy in my area blasting & stripping paint. His thoughts were to stip it with plastic, then go over any rusty spots with the sandblaster. I am sure there are guys stripping with sand..... but you have to be carefull not to warp the tin. good luck,crazyL

I had my inner fenders sandblasted while my truck was apart, and I would not do it again, too much pitting from the sand. I couldn't imagine doing that to a cab. Maybe a frame, but not a cab. Media blasting is a little kinder to the metal.

i have a friend sand blasting the cab to his 64 F word but i have no idea how it will turn out.

So the media blast is a plastic material? I will call the place and see if they do that too or just sand. If they don't I will find somewhere else to get it done.

HEY! I'm from Broken Bow, small world! I just had my floor and top of cab sandblasted when I had paint job done. If you're gonna do it, do it before u install anything inside. I vacuumed sand for weeks before I got it all out.

I had my 69 Camaro convertible stripped with plastic media. Well worth it. I still found little pieces of plastic everywhere. But it is way better than sand. Sandblasting can create lots of heat and possibly warp a panel.

If you have the money have it acid dipped. Second choice would be powder blasted. Last choice would be sand blasted.

What ever choice you chose, an etching primer is highly recomended once you have bare metal. Then you will be able to slick out the metal and get ready for paint.

Soda blasting IMO is the best way to strip metal. It doesn't heat up the metal, pit it, or wharp it. The others are right, straight sandblasting will do more harm than good...but it is great for chassis and its components.

Dipping is also good, but if you go that route and spray primer the cab...you will miss areas since dipping gets in EVERY little nook and cranny whereas a spary gun cant....thus causing bare metal to be exposed and rust.

I had my cab sand blasted, and the guy that did it did a great job ! He stood back a bit and blasted it. Came out great !
