Trans and Rear gear

Right now I have a Turbo 400 and 4:56's.

I'm droppin a 350 horse small journal 327 in, I don't want to spin this motor at 7k everywhere I go just to go 60...

The truck is gonna be my work truck, it's going to be used, hauling the trailer and racecars, like it did when my grandma owned it.

I was thinking, how would a 700r4 with 4:10's do me?
I still want this truck to pull anything up the side of a hill, (or close to it) but I would love some drive-ability.

Re: Trans and Rear gear

It really depends on your rear tire o.d. If your running a 28" tire a 3.73 mated with a 700r trans would be a good all around gear.

Re: Trans and Rear gear

I'm sure I will meet lots of opposition but I followed the advise of Jake at Jakes performance and went with a 4l80e. I was in the same situation as you and he said that the 700 will work for a while but even built right pulling it in OD will result in a shorter life for the 700. Now I'm sure some of you have put over 1 million miles on your 700 pulling your 5th wheel loaded for bear. Thats all fine and good I went with the advise of someone with far greater experience in the tranny field. Flame away

Re: Trans and Rear gear

I have to agree with Lowlife.
The 700R4 is not a good choice for pulling.
Go with a 3.73 and a T350 or 400 your choice. ( I am a T350 fan)
Or go 4.10/4l80E
The 1st option will be about 1/3 the money of the second and a fair easier swap.

Re: Trans and Rear gear

Isn't the 4L80E electronic?

And a Turbo 350-400 with 3.73's is a no go.
Haulin trailer with 3k lbs racecar and a **** load of tools/fuel.

200R4 same as the 700 for the most part, right?

Re: Trans and Rear gear

Hang a Gear vendors overdrive on the back of your 400 turbo, that would be 1 tough combo If you need a little cruise range on the hyway, a set of 4.10's would do the trick. it will be more costly than a 700r4, but cheaper than a 4l80E& pretty much "bullet proof" crazyAL

Re: Trans and Rear gear

Yes a 4l80E is electronic but dozens of folks make stand alone electronics for them - hence the added cost.
Why not a T350 or 400 with 3.73 gears?
This was a preferred comination from GM engineers for many years
The 200R4 and the 700R4 are not the same thing, the 200r4 has next to know aftermarket parts compared to any of the other combinations offered.

Man that would be sweet, I looked at em on their website and they're pretty trick, my bestfriend's grandpa put one on his late 80's dually with a 5 speed and it works great.

Even with the 4:56 rear gear with the OD I think I'd probably be alright, they show you all the ratio's on their site.

Re: Trans and Rear gear

Leave the 4.56 in there and swap in a 4L80 with a manual valve body. This will cost less than the GV, and is better IMO because you will have a lockup converter which won't heat up the transmission oil in OD like the GV will with the TH400. Later, when you get your inheritance, you can replace the valve body and install a controller.
