1967 steering question

i have a 67 k10 and i want to lift it 4 in but what can i do about the steering because i have the box that swings front to back not side to side with a closed knuckle front diff.will anything have to be done to steering thats in the truck or would it have to be converted to a new style thanks john

My 67 3/4 ton had a 4" lift when i bought it with stock non power steering , the steering arm hit my tire when making a turn, 33or 35" tires, I installed a disc brake front axle and added power steering....BIG DIFFERANCE!! way better.
To answer your question the stock steering still worked with the 4" lift, but watch your tire size

All chevy 4X4 trucks have a steering box that swings front to back. If you want to go side to side, get a 2WD steering box and do a cross-over steering set-up. It's a lot of work if you're not going to need it. but you can run your 4" lift w/o converting to the cross-over steer.

All full size GM 4X4s, 1969 to 1987 ('91 for Suburbans and Blazers).

I'd also suggest a dropped pitman arm or raised steering arm to compensate for the 4" lift. Not really required but will ease up on the steering angles a bit.

Grendel, I don't think anyone makes a raised steering arm for the closed knuckle axle that he has. When I did my lift on my 69 K20, also closed knuckled, I had to go with an adjustable drop drag link to fix my steering issues.

Then I go with the dropped pitman arm. An adjustable draglink works as well.

I haven't checked, but I think they make spacers for the steering arms that go onto a closed knuckle?

i could find anything that helps my steering arm hangs down and swings front to back i could find any other years except for 67 that have this style any help

you'll also have to deal with the frame difference if you go with a newer PS box. 67-68 frames were flat behind the box and 69 and up frames had a "dimple". You can search this board for some fixes that guys have done. I plan on making a bracket to hold it... Not a simple bolt on though...

I suggest finding a newer axle to gain disc brakes, raised steering arm and get it done all at once. Just be sure to match the gear ratios. The axle is a bolt in fix but then you have to deal with the master cylinder issue... This is how one fix creates multiple fixes and sooner or later your truck is in 5,000 pieces!

I have 6in of lift and the stock steering arm on my 68 and I dont have any trouble as long as its not flexed out I cant turn as sharp as i would like but Im changing to cross over now that Im puting the d60 in it so I shouldnt have any trouble.
