Fastest speed

I have seen all the great engine and transmission combos on this site and know there is a time where everyone will put there foot to the floor and see what happens.

So what is the fastest you have taken your vehicle upto. Then list what's under the hood that got you to that speed and what the vehicle is.

My 71 GMC was a 292 4 speed granny combo that I got up to a whopping 80 before I thought she was going to blow.

Re: Fastest speed

I got mine back to zero once I'm not sure how fast that is but I was pulling on my friend that was doing 140 ish. I've got a 5.3 ls with a cam and head work backed by a tremec tko and a 3.73 posi. I don't really care to do it again as I'm sure white walls are by no means rated for that and I can't imagine the trouble I could get myself into doing something that stupid.

Re: Fastest speed

The gear ratio is the most important spec to know for gaining top speed. Tire size (diameter) is the other factor. All transmissions are 1:1 unless overdrive

Re: Fastest speed

One day with my old BB (396) truck and 3:08's I just kept pushing on the gas pedal and the speedo went to 97mph before I backed off. I didn't think I was going that fast because the truck was real steady and stable ay that speed. Next time I took my GPS to verify sped and yep when the speedo said 95mph the GPS was showing 93mph. I was impressedwith Ole Pinky

Re: Fastest speed

I've never pegged my old trucks out but I was into street racing 15-20 years ago. My little '85 S10 blazer was clocked at 120. Sold it and bought a crotch rocket CBR929. I sold it too but the night before the guy was coming to get it my wife wanted to go for one more ride. It was about 1am or so and coming home I laid into it pretty hard. My wife's sign for me to slow down was to tap on my leg. I never felt the tap and next thing I know I glance down and speedo said 169mph. My wife was kinda pissed when we stopped and I asked why she didn't tap. She said she felt like she was going to fly off the bike and couldn't let go of my waist to tap. Looking back it was pretty stupid with her on with me but it felt pretty cool going that fast.

Re: Fastest speed

I decided that I could afford the gas, and gave it the boot coming home down an empty, straight, stretch of local two lane highway. I had it up to 85mph before I lifted. Real stable, no drama, but the 4.10 gears and that TH350 had me concerned that I was pushing the engine too hard.

Need to try again after I get it buttoned up from the head swap.

Re: Fastest speed

I don't recall a top speed in any of my truccks enough to report. But, in a '72 Cheyenne Super/20 with 350/TH350/4.10s/33" rear tires I sustained 80 mph for much of the way down the I-95 to SC with no issues. I still have that engine/trans for something else. They are original and outlasted the truck. It did throw the timing chain on my wife. I replaced that and did the heads for no-lead while I was at it. In fact, it was straight out of the shop when I blasted down the pike 75-80 mph all the way to SC. I broke it in right!

Re: Fastest speed

Got my truck to a whopping 80mph one day trying to catch up with the car club cruise chain. 357, TH350, 4.10, no tach so I didn't want to push it any higher

Re: Fastest speed

114mph on a 1/4 drag strip.

With the fresh steering, redhead box, and being lowered it was a piece of cake. The truck just loafed to that speed on the 5.3 turbo.

Re: Fastest speed

Way back me and my wife had a friendly little race with her sable and my truck, didn't realize how fast I actually went but my wife said I was going about 113mph. This was with my trucks old 305 sbc. I was running a 29 inch tall tire with 373 rear gear and a th350. Prolly took me about a mile and a half to get up to that speed and it was topped out. Have not even attempted to see what my 350 would do.

Re: Fastest speed

I cracked 100 on mine once just to say I had done it. Only time in 18 years I've had it up that fast. For the most part, it never sees over 75mph anymore. It has 350/700R/3.73 and it took her a while to get up that fast and I didn't feel real confident to keep it there very long.

Re: Fastest speed

I had mine up to 80 mph and it was very stable. I have 19.5s dually, flatbed, 383 cu bored over 30 and a TH350. This weekend I will test it with a 5.3L and 5 spd od. Now, with my ex supercharged porsche 928 I had up to 185 mph on a highway does not count, right?

Re: Fastest speed

I had mine to 115 on the gps once because some guy in an old budget Porsche (924 maybe?) wouldn't let me on the highway, then slowed down, then speeded up when I went to pass. Last time I glanced at the gps it was 115, and I decided to back down before I did something really stupid. All my suspension, brakes, steering are new, poly bushings, front and rear sway bars, good shocks. It never even vibrated.

I have a crate 350, 382 hp(engine dyno), Tremec TKO 600, 3.73 rear, 29" tires. It will scoot pretty good when you want to, but its really built to just cruise and play around. Lopes down the highway at 75 (2200 rpm) all the time.

Re: Fastest speed

i felt bad after i realized it, but i was driving home from work and the car in front was cruising at 55 in a 65 so i went to pass them and they sped up and there was another car coming. so i had it up to 80ish and passed them. it felt and handled great. i found out a week later that my speedometer is off 10mph at 60 so it was atleast 90mph that i had gone when passing them. it handled it great thoe. its a '72 gmc C20 with mostly stock 350/4 barrel quadrajet/th350 4.10 gears and 31" tires. (hei swap on the engine is all)

I was doing "M" in the "MPH" at the bottom of the speedo.

Not sure how fast that is... but it was fast enough.

I had my '69 (0.030" bored 396/ Turbo 400/ 3.08 gear) up to 110 mph before I backed off. Had my buddy in a rice burner driving next to me so I could see what she could do.

Re: Fastest speed

I've done well over 100 mph on stretches of desert highway without breaking a sweat. I run a 383 stroker dynoed at 450 hp/475 ft-lbs, TH350 auto, Gear Vendors overdrive bolted to my NP205 transfer case, with 35 inch tires and 4.10 gears. Yes, this is in a 4x4 K5 Blazer with 1-ton running gear. The best part is when a little rice burner tries to get racy with me at those speeds and I can just put the pedal down a bit more and keep pulling away and hes just taching out well beyond the point that his little 4 or 6 banger can make power.

102 in my gmc. 133 in my trans am. But I live in the mountains and it's hard to go real fast.

Re: Fastest speed

Probably about 80 or so in our '67 before the engine started smoking all the time, and before all gauges except oil pressure quit working.

I came really close to 30mph going around the block since the rebuild. Still too fast for comfort as it's my first time rebuilding everything.
