Re: could someone please post a pic

I recently removed the stock size spare tire from the spare rim and kept one of the old slightly wider tires I was removing only to find it didn't fit back under the truck. I had to lengthen that threaded rod (in that 2nd pic above) Just barely had enough to make it work. Was a real pain since it had 24 years worth of dirt and rust on the threads.

Re: could someone please post a pic

BTW, you may consider looking into using a newer version off a 88-up that has the actuator that is turned by the tire tool... That big bolt can become a serious PAIN.

Best pic I could find... http://www.sirmichaels.com/display_part/47.php

Mine was bent too, been that way ever since I got the truck a few years back since I never needed the spare (knock on wood). But while I had the spare out, I took that funky sheet metal adjustor nut off and took that rod out and straightened it. I didnt' think it would come out at first, thought there might not be room with the bed in the way, but there was room to get it out.

Re: could someone please post a pic

I think the old spare I removed was a stock size 225, and the rod (which is actually just a real long bolt) on the permanently attached end (in the second pic above next to the two exhaust pipes) was set at a length about like that picture. The nut you see in the picture is jam nut, and there's another nut in the channel above, took a box end wrench to get at it. The tire I kept for a spare is a 255/70-15, so there was no way it was going under there with the bolt at that setting. I had to lengthen that bolt using most of the thread that was left. On the end of the spare holder that opens up , I do have a few threads sticking out the bottom of that cheesey sheet metal nut, so the 255 size tire did fit. I'm sure so a 235 should fit with only minor adjustments.

Re: could someone please post a pic

235/75 will fit with the factory parts. I am running this size on my 78 k-10 with a 8" rally as a spare and it works fine. I bought new bolts and nut from GM a couple of years ago, but I see now the bolts are no longer available. A dealer my still have some in stock. If you want the part numbers, let me know.
