Started welding on my new cab today

Hey,

The cab on my '78 is f^&%3& up so i picked up a donor from a buddy. It is also pretty f^&%3& up but it is better none the less.

I picked up a cheap flux core welder about a month ago and I thought that I might learn to do some body work.

Today I started with the hole by the heater core. I figured that since it was pretty much a flat piece of steel in an inconspicuous place it would be a good place to start.

This is my first ever shot at body work and metal fab:

I will snap some photos of the rest of the work to be done later.

A friend of mine is going to bring down his MIG for some of the more aesthetically crucial areas.

That looks pretty darn good for a first go around.

I have been practicing on my 73 by replacing most of the floor and rear cab corners before I really get down to my 56 project. For the most part I am pretty happy with the results and found that taking my time pays off. Don't try to do too much at once and don't grind too much off. Also worth it to shine a light behind if you can too see if you have any pine holes to weld up.

I however could not seem to get it right with my cheap Princess Auto welder and went out and bought a little Miller. What a difference it made for me. Looks like you will not have to worry about that. I now keep .035 wire in the cheapy and the smaller wire in the Miller for body work. Maybe I just wanted the Miller I don't know but a guy can never have too many tools!!!

I'm not sure how you welded it and I'm not saying I'm a master welder by any means just going to school for it but for mig on thin metal if you want try this try vertical down If you ever get the chance I learned it from my teacher and it does make it easier, also helps doing the push technique as opposed to the pull or drag on thin metal but I can't do vertical down because its not allowed just a thought hope it helps
