VIN on the frame?

Where would the VIN be on the frame of the C10?

I have a 80 cab but I want to make sure it's the matching frame for it (parts truck being rebuilt)

Thanks

I would have said passenger side, top of the rail under the cab.

That's where we put 'em in Flint.

Where was your truck built, do you know?

Don't know, that's the problem.

The frame has dual tanks, but the cab isn't wired for it.

I see; I'm guessing there isn't a VIN on the cab (or you think it's the wrong one) and that's why you are looking for the one on the frame? Do you happen to have the cab and box off?

At any rate - I believe it should be on the top of the rail, because of the way the "stamp" pressed the numbers in.

Thanks, Aaron.

Is it on the top of the rail, or when you say "outside" does that mean you can view it from beside the truck?

Assuming it was built in either Oshawa or Flint I'd say top of the rail, pass side, under the cab.

The cab has a VIN, just not sure if it's the same on the frame. The cab and frame are still together.

Re: VIN on the frame?

Mine on my 78 is actually stamped twice. Is that normal? It is stamped once passenger side top rail under cab and once again about 10 inches towards the rear. Truck was built in Canada if it makes a difference.

Re: VIN on the frame?

if I had a driver side fuel take, most of the numbers would be hidden

Re: VIN on the frame?

I have an 82 C20 built in StLouis; it's stamped on the driver's side under the cab on top of the rail (you wouldn't be able to see it with the cab in place) and if memory serves it's stamped again on the same rail somewhat to the rear, but I'm a little foggy on that one. If it matters I can look at it tomorrow in the sunlight.

Re: VIN on the frame?

For what it's worth, it's only the last 8 of the VIN; I assume that was S.O.P. (Kieth?)

Re: VIN on the frame?

It shouldn't be a problem since you're only trying to verify if the frame & cab match...the first 9 digits of the vin tell you it's made in USA, GM, Chevrolet, tonnage, 2 or 4 doors, 2 or 4 wheel drive and which engine it shipped with...the last 8 tell you year, plant it was built in, and the last 6 are unique to your truck. You already know everything the first 9 tell you.

Make sense, or did I confuse you? All the shop manuals have a chart that explains what the various letters/numbers in the VIN mean. I've seen the same chart in the front of the LMC catalog too. I'm assuming we're talking about a 1981-up vehicle; 1980 and back used a different system. In 1981 all cars built everywhere adopted a 17 digit VIN system designed to standardize how they were interpreted. The first digit, for example, tells you the country of origin...1 is USA, for example, J is japan, W is Germany...so I'm assuming yours starts off with a 1. Then a G for GM. There oughta be a chart online somewhere, but I didn't find a good one with a quick Google search. But surely you have an LMC catalog? Some of the others might have it too. Sorry for the long post; hope I made sense. If not, just ask; I'll keep looking for a better site to link to.

Re: VIN on the frame?

Found a good site; GM no less. Click on the model year of your truck and it'll give you a pdf file of how to interpret each letter/number of your VIN...

Sounds right. Twice on the same truck is within reason, too.
