Found baby blue rust-o-leum in a rattle can!

There has been alot of discussion on here about cheaper alternatives to a paint job, from roll on's to rattle cans.

I dont have a large compressor at my house or enough garage space or even the money to do a professional job right now. my truck has sat for 15 years in the back yard up until recently when I pulled it out and started working on it again. With all that said I want to drive it again not tear it all apart and let it sit for years while I do a pro job. I want to stop the rust and make it presentable to drive,.... one day I will do a resto on it

I found a spray bomb that looks just like what I want..... the powder blue an original color ages to. I think the new paint would have been a little more blue and less powder blue, but I also think 66 models were a diferent blue.... anyways here is some photos of the spray bomb. I shot just a little on a fender to check it out. It is called GLOSS SPA BLUE

I have painted things with a rattle can before and it you wet sand and buff it, it looks GREAT!

Tell me what ya think of the color

Re: Found baby blue rust-o-leum in a rattle can!

Keep in mind I did no prep work.... no body work at all .... no sanding no dent fixing. I just squirted a few sprays right on top of all the rust, just to see what color was actually in the can. It is only sprayed on the top few inches of the front half of the fender, faded into the the lower.

The can is a new looking design and is called painter's touch and says ultra coverage 2X the coverage of regular rustoleum. Double cover technology.

It is very glossy and I think will look nice. I am going to sand and prime the hood and spray it first. it is the worst as far as surface rust so anything will be an improvement.

I am excited if ya can't tell .....Lol

color looks good.. if you are going for a glossy look you could clear it with this
http://www.spraymax.de/index.php?id=361&L=1

its pretty much automotive grade clear in a can.. i used it on my steering wheel and i was really impressed with how well it sprayed. hardens up really good to

I know Home Depot sells that 2x product line, I will have to look for that color. I have been using a Krylon Stainless Steel color for my bumpers and trim. I really like the look of it and I think it would go well with this Rustoleum Blue as a body color..

That's a great color.
I'm with you 100%!
I want to drive my truck.
...and down the road I may strip it down and 'do it right' as some say.

I've been mixing mine - combining a few colors to get the look I want:

Here's a post I made on the subject in another thread:

How often does someone put off doing anything, because someone says you should 'do it right'?
Then the truck starts rusting away because you don't do anything. So paint it with something. Protect it until you can afford to do it right.

Nooo!! Don't spray that hood, it's perfect. Just wait a few days and get one on a truck coming into the yard!
It is a great color tho.

Re: Found baby blue rust-o-leum in a rattle can!

Hey, did you just poopon the poupon?? (sorry, couldn't pass that up).

I, for one, have a can of this very paint waiting for me on the workbench for some minor touchup work. My truck is original light blue code, but was repainted about 15 yrs ago. Interested to see how well it matches.

Very glad you posted, I was just out the door on my way to home depot and grabbed a can.

Re: Found baby blue rust-o-leum in a rattle can!

I personally think that patina is WAY over rated also BUT if you aren't going to do it the right way why not just leave it? I have done a lot of things wrong on my project in the past and never again! The patina looks lot better than rattle can is going to (and this is from a patina "hater"). Patina has old elegance but rattle can is going to ruin it! Just my unsolicited 2 cents. The color looks good to answer your question. Truck looks good the way it is!

Re: Found baby blue rust-o-leum in a rattle can!

I have friends in the import car scene and go to their car meets on occassion. There is a guy there that rattle canned his who car flat black and it honestly looks amazing. I could barely tell it was done with a spray paint, and actually looked better than some 'professional' jobs i've seen.

Of course nothing will ever be as nice as a professionally painted job, but if you take your time and prep it right, you could make it come out decent.

With that said i loved the patina on your truck, wish mine had some.

My son and I rattle canned his Pontiac Lemans with Krylon Satin spray paint and it looks great.... For his age it is the perfect paint because it is easy to fix any body damage after the fact...

Re: Found baby blue rust-o-leum in a rattle can!

ok, primed and painted a scrap piece of sheet metal and wasn't real close to the original - or at least the "original" on my truck. Appears to be missing some green tint. Having said that - if you painted a WHOLE truck in that exact color, nobody could ever really notice the difference - it is that close. But for touch up, it was a no go.

Btw - that Lemans is pretty cool for a can. Pretty cool for a pro. Nice car.

Re: Found baby blue rust-o-leum in a rattle can!

Thank you on the Lemans....I am no pro...never painted a car before and I just can't come to pony up the big bucks for a real paint job. It fit my son's Lemans because I knew he would have his share of dents and dings and with the 63' truck it just seems to fit the image of her. She is no show truck for sure.

It is NOT painted YET.... Yet being the key word, it will get painted whether by spray bomb or with a gun. Paint is my goal, just pondering paint on a budget. I will try it on some extra parts I have and see how I like it. Eventually it will be Shinny

Thanks for everyones input, I just gotta go the Shinny paint route
