Exterior Windshield Visor? Does anyone have one/build them?
So, whilst driving into the sun this beautiful, cloudless morning, I was partially blinded by the blaring sun. I flipped down my inside visor, pushed it all the way forward, and continued on my merry way.
A few miles later, I got to thinking, it would be really nice (and pretty cool) if I had a stainless steel visor on the outside of the truck, that would drop down to about the top of the rearview mirror. Kinda like on some late-40s/early-50s Chevy trucks, such as the one in the image. Has anyone done such a thing?

Re: Exterior Windshield Visor? Does anyone have one/build them?
Here are a couple of pics of my truck with the visor I've had on it since about 1984. The bodyman who painted the truck handmade this visor at that time. It's the only one I've ever seen like it. I saw one truck, many years ago, that had one modified from the fiberglass visors for the '73's and newer, but it naturally didn't fit right and I thought it looked awful. Mind you, some people like mine, and some people don't.
These pictures were from the day before the truck went to be disassembled for a frame-up redo, but the new bodyman has been in 'witness-protection' (said sarcastically!) and not much has been done with it yet in the 18 months since! As I'm tall, the only drawback to the visor was it reduced my line-of-sight to traffic lights, but when the paint was still glossy I could see them reflected off the hood! |

I know the visibility would be reduced, especially when trying to see traffic lights, but that's something I'm willing to sacrifice to save from sun glare. I may end up fabricating my own. I like yours, Daryl, even though I'm not fully understanding why the center portion is the way it is, I think it would look a little better if it was more uniform across lol but thanks for ideas!

If that visor was home made, he did a good job. The open raised area is necessary to relieve air pressure so it doesn't get ripped off. You'll notice all visors have a way for air to pass through. That style of visor was offered for these trucks. There were also "Supervisors" in fiberglass.
In steel, up into the '90s, there were steel visors offered by J&J Enterprises in stainless or primed steel

I have the fibreglass style on a 86 dually.
It's a CHooChoo Custom truck. It also has the fibreglass extension thing on the rear of the cab. And,yes,it blocks your view of traffic lights. Mike. |

10 minutes of Google search using 67-72 external sun visor landed these threads and one company.

This one is steel tubing on the lower edge, with steel sheet tacked to that. Rock-guard sprayed on the underside. Bolted (or screwed?) to the underside of the drip-edge with the heads being covered with a plastic cap. I never had any problems with it on the highway, except when it was windy the spring base on the antenna would flex and cause it to hit the visor . |

Not a terrible job. That vent in the center could use a lower profile
