Wood Bed Stain & Hub Caps
Hello,
I'm a college student restoring a 1970 C10 with my friends... We ordered a wood bed kit and wondering what is the best stain and glossy finish to treat the wood with. Also since new wheels are so much money for us, we were thinking of sandblasting the current wheels down and painting red and putting moon hub caps on the wheels. A couple questions with that...knowing they are 6 lug x 5.5inch...what size tires will fit with the stock wheels that are on it? also what size hub caps should we order? I know these questions may pain some of you but we are new to this and loving restoring it so far! Thank you so much for the help in advance. Also any advice on this project is greatly appreciated |

Re: Wood Bed Stain & Hub Caps
Min wax is terrible stain, go to a supplier as sherwin williams and get some good quality stains that have good drying agents in the stain or you can also find good quality marine varnishes that are tinted.

Re: Wood Bed Stain & Hub Caps
On the contrary , It is fine if applied correctly . you need to apply it with a rag / cloth not sop it on with a brush or spray it .

Re: Wood Bed Stain & Hub Caps
Total Boat clear epoxy works great if you are planning on putting automotive clear on top of wood. Epoxy keeps the clearcoat from soaking into wood.

Re: Wood Bed Stain & Hub Caps
On mine we used a water based aniline dye to stain the wood, and several coats of Epiphanes extra U/V block spar varnish - turned out very nice and durable. That finish is often used on boats and kayaks - I purchased it at a marine store.

Re: Wood Bed Stain & Hub Caps
Minwax is furniture grade. You need something that can get hotter than a kitchen, more sun than your living room, wetter than your bathroom, and hold up to more than platters and place settings than your dining room table. Heck, more wear than your family room floor. Looking at a product that exceeds the duty your bed floor will ever ask of it would be the best thing to use . . . imho
I like 235/75-15s on that wheel. I like your idea for baby moons. You know in thiis era there was a base car hubcap that was a baby moon with the bowtie stamped in it. I've never seen any hubbub about those and I'm surprised. I have GMCs, so no plethora of car hubcaps to choose from.

Re: Wood Bed Stain & Hub Caps
I think STOCK HUBCAPS are the best choice. Paint or not, search this forum and get some ideas. If your rims are stock they will have nubs on the rims for hub caps to attach. Do you have the stock caps? Don't throw them out some one would like to have them. Good luck. (not my truck pic borrowed from here)

Re: Wood Bed Stain & Hub Caps
Any exterior wood surface faces two threats, UV degradation and water damage.
Ongoing maintenance requirements should also be a consideration. I have found that an epoxy coating followed by up to eight coats of exterior spa varnish returns the best balance of finish quality and longevity. Yes it takes a lot of work, but it is worth it in the long run. or You could go with the factory finish..linseed oil and lamp black... Either way, you should coat the bottom and side edges of each board with POR-15 (several coats) to protect them from the elements. BTW...Larry's kits are excellent...top quality materials and fantastic hand finishing. |

Re: Wood Bed Stain & Hub Caps
That looks sweet, GR8-68. Tell us what wood that is. I think I know but I'll let you tell.
I'm not into show quality anymore, so I'll be oiling my wood. No hard sealing surface for me. I want to haul and not do a lot of maintenance. When it looks like it's getting dry, just slop more oil (meaning finish material) on and let it soak. Heck, if it turns out rougher around the edges I will just do used automotive oil mixed with kerosene.
