55.2-59 Fuel Tank and Fill Question
I have a 55.2 3100. Installed a sidefill rear mount tank and a filler assembly with door from a 88 chevy truck. My problem is that its really hard to put gas it in. The filler neck has a 5/8 hose with a free flowing filter and the tank has a vent hose that runs above the tank. The slope on the filler hose is around 30°
The filler neck also has that small spring loaded flap that the nozzle pushes out of the way when filling. I was thinking of removing the neck and cutting the inside of the filler neck to get rid of that little flap and making the fill hole bigger like the old school filler necks. Has anyone here had this issue or does anyone have any input pertaining to this problem. Thanks in advance for any input. I have attached a picture of the tank and the side fill fender location |

Loose the flap. And do I read that right the filler neck is only 5/8 and it has a filter in it?
If so that is your real issue Ad that picture if you can |

I got your PM. For my setup I’m using a K5 blazer tank and a marine style fuel filler in the stepside fender. I believe the filler hose size is 2”. My vent hose is 3/8”. I don’t have much trouble filling it up as long as I don’t run the pump wide open, if I run it at 1/2 speed it’s fine. My issue there is that I don’t have a ton of slope in the filler hose so it doesn’t drain into the tank as fast as it could. I would agree with above and loose the flapper and see how that changes things.

I can barely put any gas in it. The minute I get a little flow it shuts off no matter what pump I use. Is your filler in about the same place as mine in the picture ?

getting rid of the flap and opening up the top of the filler will help on the fill because you can get a better angle. That small slope is most of your issue and it has a 90 at end to drop into the tank between these two you probably getting some back splash in the neck causing the pump to stop and make you reset.
another thing you can try is after your remove the flap and open the hole up. try different positions of the handle. I had a ride one time that I always filled with handle upside down. it just flowed a lot better in that setup. The vent should be enough at 5/8 as long as it has not kinks. and open then end will help with venting at the fill side as well. |

if you remove the flap door get ready for some gas burping if its a slow filler.
betting ther slow fill is due to restriction of the 90 degree tank entry as well as the low slope angle from the fill location. is the vent tube inside the filler hose or is it a sepersate connection from the tank that connects to the filler near the filler? |

The vent tube on the filler tube is actually blocked off. We not only have the 3/8 vent tube with a hose we also added a fitting right at the neck and ran a 5/8 hose from it and zip tied it to the filler neck.
Today I took off the filler neck and cut it up near the top. I then shortened the lower piece and swedged it to fit over the top piece and brazed the 2 together. I also used a hole saw and cut out the center where the flap was and opened it up. This gave me a more aggressive angle. I went to put gas in it and took care of the issue. I appreciate your input on all of this. I see now why people put the filler on top of the fender now. I just don’t like the way that looks. I also did not want to cut up my aluminum bed either. Smokey Road make a nice bed for our trucks with hidden bolts. Real clean look. They have all kinds of grains to choose from too. Thanks again !!! |

Nice to see it works. appreciate the detailed feedback as well.
Lots of folk on lots of forums will take advise and never get back as to if it worked or didn't work and what they ended up doing. The good feedback helps guys that later find this on a search and have a good ending to see. Thanks and glad its filling better. |
