Question A game called "name that wire"

New column arrived and now I need to identify the various wires in the harness. This column is dimensioned per my special needs but the electronics appear to be standard 80's GM. I can sit down and meter these out to figure out what they do, but I figure we've got lots of color code experts out there who already know this stuff by heart. Anyone know what wires are what???

Are you going to hook up the column mounted wiper switch, or the ignition switch? That is where all your headace is going to be.
But then again, it'd look kinda stupid with these switches on the column not hooked up.

Hmmmmm? I think those wires that are hooked to that thing-a-ma-giggy go to your flux capacitor....... not sure about the rest though. Hope that helped.

Thanks for all the uh... "encouragement" so far (especially you, slammed67)

These are just standard GM wires... can anyone point me to online "Chilton-esque" resources? I just need to know what the wires do, and then I can translate them to their counterparts in the truck's harness. Fat pink wire is equivalent to our fat yellow... the starter wire. But the rest I don't know off the top of my head.

I THINK I recognize that semi-circular connector as the turn signals. At least that's what it looks like on our older trucks.

I would think your column's manufacturer would be able to provide a schematic of some kind for you. Double check your packing material and look for something in Chinese, that's probably it.

Maybe a mid-80's GM Chilton would get you started?

You have alot of extra wires on there that our vintage of trucks don't have! The bundle with the larger guage orange wires is your ignition. The large guage purple wire is your neutral safety switch. The small guage green and blue bundle is your backup lights. Anyone else?

pic 2 is the high /low beam switch
pic 3 is neutral safety and backup lamps
pic 4 is the ignition switch while the circular one is the turn signal switch connector

Logic would have these being shifter related since they're on the arc... based on what you guys have said so far, I have them as follows...

I already have the semi-circular plug from my existing harness, and this adapter was made to work with it, so I ASSume I don't need to worry about them. What about other bigger gauge wires?

OK, I think I've got everything figured out except the ones circled below. They appear to be wiper related, but I can't work out the logic on them. Coming from the column itself are 3 wires... white, gray, purple. When they hit the plug they change colors. And the pink is added and jumped to a second pin as well. The column has 2 speed + intermittent + off for the wipers. The only wires I could work out were the gray and black, with continuity at wiper high. Anyone??

Pretty much everything else translates over to the truck harness easily except that there is no ON for the lights on the column-- just hi/lo. I'll have to add an ON switch somewhere.

At least on this column, no. The ones in the pic just above your last post (circled with the question mark) are wiper related. So far, the only thing I've been able to figure out on them is that the gray and pink have continuity when the wiper switch is on high. No other pairings seem to have any continuity with one another at any other point. The wiper stalk is a brand new GM part so it's probably not the switch itself that's bad. I think it may be more than just continuity involved... maybe varying resistance levels. I'll be checking for that as soon as I get a chance.

As for all the big wires, they appear to match up color for color with existing harnesses. So just splice and go. I won't be able to even mount this column up until my cab gets back from the chop top... but I do know that I'm going to have to do some cutting on the stock column support because the later model columns have a larger diameter than the stock ones.
