Drug a longhorn home

Picked this one up in western montana. Not terrible condition but not great either. Good running 402. My first top of the line longhorn. Ive had a couple cheyennes and a sierra, but no grande or super. I will probably give it a tune up and a thorough cleaning. I have a near perfect seat for it. Also a tilt and tach. Probably going to be my easy winter project.

Re: Drug a longhorn home

GREAT starting point. If I may, how does the lower trim between the cab and tool box, the 6" piece, attach to the bed? Mine was held on with 4 screws but when I bought a replacement piece, no holes in it and they sent 2 clips.

Re: Drug a longhorn home

People usually put the screws in because the clips broke. I don't think screws were ever standard for mounting trim lol. The clips are the correct way to install them.

Nice old workhorse. I'm digging that back bumper. I've never seen a "Longhorn" GMC in person before. It's a pretty rare bird.

GMC never called them Longhorns. But then again it is a Cheyenne Super.

Re: Drug a longhorn home

I had a sierra longhorn before. GMC called them custom campers(their is 2 different custom campers in GMC land, longhorn and the regular custom camper option). This would be a double custom camper I guess you could say.

They did in fact use screws in the trim. Two in the lower trim behind the front bumper, and I believe two in the lower trim at the rear of the bed, and one in the front of the upper door trim where it dips down....

Re: Drug a longhorn home

400 or 402? I'm confused... Isn't the 400 a small block? And the 402 a big block? Either way that is a sweet truck. Nice find!

They badged the 402's as 400.

Yes, the '71 I just picked up is a big block truck and it has the 400 badges on it.

Re: Drug a longhorn home

It runs good. Tranny needs a filter and fluid I think. And PS needs some fluid(it leaks). Other than that it cruises around just fine. And thanks lockdoc, I forgot about those screws in the end.

Re: Drug a longhorn home

I just sold my '69 GMC "longhorn" to a nice gentleman here in Maryland. It is a nearly identical unit to yours, but came with custom options and a 350SB. I kind of miss it already seeing yours. As far as I can tell, the GMC version of the Longhorn is rare.
